The best plug-in track lighting

A room with no ceiling fixture has two honest options: put light on the floor with lamps, or put it on the ceiling without wiring. Track is the second one done properly. One run carries several heads, each aimed where you want it, from a single cord.

What makes it worth the screws is aim. A lamp lights a corner; a track head lights the thing you point it at - a bookshelf, a worktop, a picture wall. Three or four of them turn a flat room into one with layers, which is the argument in layered lighting.

Be clear about the trade, though. Plug-in track still screws into the ceiling, and the cord has to reach an outlet. It is a renter-viable fixture, not a no-trace one. If even screw holes are out of the question, the alternatives are in ceiling lights that need no wiring.

1. Head count against room size. Four heads is the useful minimum for a living room; twelve is a different product for a long space.
2. Track length, because it is fixed. A 3.3 ft track cannot cover a 14 ft wall, and extending a proprietary track is rarely possible.
3. Cord length and where it exits. This decides whether the installation looks deliberate or improvised.
4. Adjustment range. Rotation and tilt figures tell you whether you can actually aim at a wall rather than the floor.
5. What is published at all. None of these publishes lumens, because bulbs are separate - but wattage caps, ratings and warranties vary from thin to absent.

Cons: bulbs are not included and the listing caps them at 7W LED, so each head is modest; no ETL or UL listing is published; and the warranty conflicts on the page, two years in a bullet against three in the table.

Bravsekai H-type, 12 heads - for a long room. Nearly 15 feet of H-type track and twelve heads, dimmable with compatible bulbs. Where an open-plan room needs one continuous run rather than two short ones, this is the scale that does it.
Cons: whether your version plugs in or hardwires depends on the configuration, so check before buying; twelve heads is a lot of ceiling commitment for a rental.

Find the joists, or use proper anchors. A track with four heads is not heavy, but it is long, and a ceiling anchor pulled out of plaster takes a chunk of ceiling with it. This is the part of the job worth ten minutes and a stud finder.

Aim at things, not at the floor. Heads pointed straight down produce pools and glare. Angled at a bookshelf, a worktop or a wall, the same four heads make the room look bigger.

Buy the bulbs deliberately. GU10 beam angles vary from tight spots to wide floods, and that choice changes the room more than the fixture does - see beam angle and spread.
