Brightness and lumens

+How many lumens does a room need?

Multiply the floor area in square feet by the published footcandle target for that room: 10 to 20 for a living room, 20 to 50 for a bedroom or general kitchen light, 5 to 10 for hallways. A 12 by 14 foot living room is 168 square feet, so 1,680 to 3,360 lumens. Add about 25 percent for dark walls and floors.

+What is the difference between lumens and watts?

Lumens measure light emitted; watts measure energy consumed. A 60-watt incandescent and an 8-watt LED both produce around 800 lumens. Buying by wattage made sense when every bulb was incandescent and is now actively misleading - read the lumen figure on the box.

+Why is my room so dark even with the lights on?

Usually one of four things: the bulbs produce fewer lumens than you assume, all the light comes from one place so the corners fall away, dark walls and furniture are absorbing it, or low CRI is making a correctly lit room look gray. Check the lumen figure on your bulbs first - it is the most common cause and the cheapest to fix.

+Will a daylight bulb make my room brighter?

No. Cool light appears crisper and is often reported as brighter, but 800 lumens is 800 lumens at 2700K and at 5000K. If you want more light, buy more lumens. If you want colder light, buy daylight - do not confuse the two purchases.

+Should all the light come from one fixture?

No, and this is the most common mistake. One bright source produces glare in your eye line, hard shadows on faces and dark corners. The same lumens split across three or four sources at different heights produces a room that reads as evenly lit.

Color temperature and bulbs

+What is the best color temperature for home lighting?

2700K for living rooms and bedrooms, 3000K for kitchen and bathroom surfaces, 3500K to 4000K for a desk used during working hours. Anything above 4000K belongs in a workshop rather than a living space.

+Is 2700K or 3000K better?

Neither. 2700K is warmer and reads as more relaxed; 3000K is slightly crisper and suits work surfaces. Side by side the difference is obvious; alone, almost nobody can identify which they are under. Consistency across a room matters more than which one you pick.

+What is the difference between warm white and soft white?

Frequently nothing. Both are marketing names rather than standards, and both usually sit between 2700K and 3000K depending on the retailer. Ignore the phrase on the front of the box and read the kelvin figure on the back.

+What is CRI and does it matter?

CRI scores how accurately a light renders colors. CRI 80 is the cheap standard and renders reds visibly poorly - wood looks flat, food looks unappetizing, skin looks unwell. CRI 90 to 95 makes the same lumens read as a brighter, warmer room, and it is the cheapest upgrade with the largest subjective effect.

+Why do some light bulbs look yellow?

Either the bulb is a low kelvin value, around 2200K to 2700K, which genuinely reads amber - or it has poor color rendering, which makes the whole room look muddy rather than yellow specifically. If the light looks yellow, it is kelvin. If the room looks drab, it is CRI.

Renting

+Can you change a light fixture in an apartment?

Replacing a hardwired fixture is an alteration, and most leases require the landlord's written consent for alterations. Many landlords agree on condition you keep the original and reinstall it at move-out. This is general information, not legal advice - lease terms and local law vary, so read yours.

+Do tenants have to replace light bulbs?

In most residential tenancies, replacing a burned-out bulb is treated as routine tenant upkeep, in the same category as smoke-alarm batteries. If the fixture itself fails rather than the bulb, that is generally the landlord's repair.

+How do you add light to a room without wiring?

Six routes, in order of how much light they deliver: higher-output bulbs in existing fixtures, a plug-in torchiere, a plug-in under-cabinet bar, a plug-in wall sconce, an adhesive LED strip, and a smart bulb in a lamp you already own. Only the first two can carry a room's ambient layer.

+Can I put up lighting without drilling?

Yes for anything under about two pounds, using heavy-duty adhesive strips on fully cured paint cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. Not for anything hanging from a ceiling - a ceiling load is straight tension on the bond, which is adhesive's weakest direction.

+Are smart bulbs allowed in a rental?

Yes. A smart bulb is a bulb, and screwing one into an existing socket is not an alteration. Smart switches are different, because replacing a switch is a change to fixed electrical installation and generally needs permission plus a neutral wire that may not be there.

Things going wrong

+Why do my dimmable LED bulbs flicker?

Most commonly because the dimmer is an older leading-edge type designed for incandescent bulbs, which LEDs draw far too little current for. The second cause is falling below the dimmer's minimum load - three LED bulbs may total under 30W where the dimmer needs 40W. Buying another bulb rarely fixes either.

+Why do my LED lights feel harsh?

Usually glare rather than quantity. An LED produces its output from a much smaller area than an old frosted incandescent, so the source is far more intense even at the same lumens. Shading it or aiming it at a ceiling fixes that; reducing the output just makes a dark room darker.

+Can a room be too bright and too dark at the same time?

Yes, and it is common. One over-bright source glares in your eye line while the corners stay in shadow, so the room reads as harsh and gloomy at once. Splitting the same lumens across several sources fixes both symptoms together.

+Why does my kitchen counter feel dark with the light on?

Because you are standing between the ceiling light and the counter, and the wall cabinets shadow it further. It is a geometry problem rather than a brightness one, and no amount of extra ceiling light fixes it. Light under the cabinet is the answer.
