There are two kinds of lighting advice online and neither one helps the person we built this for.

The design publishers understand the constraint - the rented apartment, the ceiling with nothing in it, the deposit - and publish no numbers at all. You will read four thousand words about layering and mood and find not one lumen figure, not one kelvin value, and no way to work out whether the lamp they recommend is bright enough for your room.

The technical publishers have the numbers and never consider the lease. They will tell you the correct illuminance for a kitchen counter and recommend hardwiring a fixture that a renter is not permitted to install.

Sconce & Socket sits in the empty middle. Every recommendation here carries both the specification that justifies it and the constraint it satisfies - how many lumens, at what color temperature, and what installing it actually requires.

Sawyer V. Sawyer V. is an enthusiast who got tired of dark rented rooms and advice with no numbers in it. No lab, no test bench - manufacturer spec sheets, published illuminance guidance, and arithmetic anyone can redo.

That is the whole biography, and the omissions are deliberate. There is no certification, no trade background, no years-of-experience claim and no editorial team of people who do not exist. What there is: a genuine interest in the subject, a willingness to read spec sheets that manufacturers clearly hoped nobody would, and the arithmetic set out on how we pick so you can check it.

The problem this site is about is one worth being annoyed by. A room with no ceiling fixture is enormously common in American rental housing, it makes a home feel worse in a way that is hard to articulate, and the advice available for it is either unactionable or requires permission you do not have.

• Compile published specifications from manufacturer pages, manuals and retailer listings - with the page linked on every pick and the date we retrieved it.
• Compute what a room needs from its floor area and published illuminance guidance, and show the working rather than asserting a number.
• Classify every pick by what installing it requires - plugs in, adhesive, screws into an existing socket, needs a ceiling box, needs a neutral wire. This column is the one nobody else prints and it is the reason the site exists.
• Write "Not published" wherever a figure does not exist, rather than estimating it.
• Name something to skip on every roundup, including where the answer is to buy nothing.
