Nothing above 4000K belongs as ambient light in a room people relax in. It is not a matter of taste so much as of context: those values read as workplace lighting because that is where they are used, and putting them in a living room imports the association along with the light.

Room by room, with the reasoning
Living room - 2700K
Used mostly after dark, mostly for relaxing. 2700K matches the incandescent light the room was probably designed around and is the tone people describe as warm rather than clinical. Full plan in living room lighting.
Bedroom - 2700K or warmer
The strongest case on this site for staying warm, because the light is used in the hour before sleep. If a bedside lamp currently has a daylight bulb in it because it was the brightest in the pack, that is worth changing first. Bedroom lighting covers the placement.
Kitchen - 3000K general, up to 4000K on the counter
A work surface justifies a slightly cooler task layer, and the counter reads as its own zone so the mismatch is not jarring. Keep the ambient kitchen light at 3000K if the kitchen is visible from a living area. Kitchen lighting has the numbers.
Bathroom - 3000K
Warm enough at 6am, accurate enough for grooming. Pair it with high CRI at the mirror - color accuracy matters more here than the kelvin value does.
Home office - 3500K to 4000K, during working hours
The one room where a cooler tone genuinely helps, and the best case for a tunable-white bulb: cool while working, warm in the evening, one socket.

A hallway is seen from the rooms either side of it, so it is a consistency problem rather than an optimization one. Match the rooms.

The two mistakes this chart is meant to prevent
- Buying daylight bulbs to fix a dark room. Cool light reads as brighter without being brighter. A room short of lumens stays short of lumens at 5000K, and now it is cold as well as dark. Work out the target first: how many lumens does a room need.
- Mixing temperatures within one visual field. The eye judges any single white poorly and two adjacent whites extremely well. Consistency within a room beats an optimized mixture every time.

2700K for living rooms and bedrooms, 3000K for kitchen and bathroom surfaces, and 3500K to 4000K for a desk used during working hours. Above 4000K belongs in workshops and task lighting rather than living space.
+What does kelvin mean on a light bulb?
Kelvin describes the color of the light, not its brightness. Low numbers are warm and orange-leaning; high numbers are cool and blue-leaning. It comes from the color a theoretical black body emits when heated to that temperature, which is why the scale runs counter-intuitively - 2700K looks warm, 6500K looks cold.
+Why do some light bulbs look yellow?
Either the bulb is a low kelvin value, around 2200K to 2700K, which genuinely reads amber - or it has poor color rendering, which makes everything look muddy rather than yellow specifically. If the light itself looks yellow, it is kelvin. If the room looks drab under it, it is CRI.
