The pattern is straightforward: adhesive is excellent for light things on vertical surfaces and wrong for anything hanging from a ceiling. A ceiling load pulls straight down on the bond, which is the direction adhesive is weakest in, and a falling pendant is the one genuinely dangerous outcome in renter-safe lighting.

Doing it so it holds
- Weigh the fixture and buy for double. Packet ratings assume a perfect surface and a straight-down load. A sconce projecting from a wall applies leverage as well as weight.
- Check the paint age. Paint needs roughly four weeks to cure fully. Anything newer will lift. If you moved into a freshly decorated apartment, wait, or use low-tack painter's tape as an underlayer.
- Clean with isopropyl alcohol. Not a damp cloth - most of what stops adhesive bonding is oily and not water-soluble. Let it dry fully.
- Press firmly for thirty seconds, across the whole strip, then leave it. Most adhesives reach full strength over the following hours.
- Respect the stated cure time before loading it. This is the step everyone skips and it is the single most common reason things fall off a wall.

Taking it off without a repair
Removal technique matters more than the product. The same strip that comes off cleanly with the right method will take paint with the wrong one.
- Warm it. A hairdryer on low, twenty to thirty seconds, across the whole strip. This softens the bond.
- Pull parallel to the surface, not away from it. Slow and steady. Pulling perpendicular is what lifts paint, veneer or plaster.
- Use the pull tab if there is one and stretch it straight down along the wall - that is exactly what the tab is designed for.
- Remove residue with isopropyl alcohol and a soft cloth. Patience rather than pressure.
Where a small hole did end up in the wall, filling and touching it up is a five minute job and sits under the make-good clause rather than the alterations one - the distinction is in can you change a light fixture in an apartment.
