Specifications are the manufacturer or retailer published figures, compiled by hand. We have not measured them, and where a figure is not published we write "Not published" rather than guess.
01
Why the bulb is the pick here
We are going to be straight about something. Plug-in sconces are overwhelmingly sold on appearance, and the great majority publish no lumen figure, no color temperature and no CRI - because most of them take a standard bulb and genuinely have nothing to publish.
That makes this a category where our usual ranking method does not apply, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. So the picks below are the bulbs that decide whether a sconce is any good, and this section is the buying criteria for the fixture itself. Choose the shape you like; choose the light on purpose.
| Check | Why | Target |
|---|---|---|
| Socket type | Decides which bulbs fit | Standard E26 gives you every option |
| Fixture weight | Decides whether adhesive is viable | Under about 2 lb for adhesive |
| Cord length | Whether it reaches the outlet | 6 ft minimum, more for a bed wall |
| Cord color | How visible it is against the wall | Match the wall, not the fixture |
| Inline switch | Whether you can reach it from the bed | On the cord, not at the fixture |
| Shade direction | Whether it lights a page or a wall | Adjustable arm if it is for reading |
A sconce with a standard E26 socket is genuinely the better buy, integrated or not. You can put a 95 CRI bulb in it for reading, a smart bulb in it for a bedside you can switch from the pillow, or a 300-lumen bulb in it if it is purely an accent.
02
Mounting without a drill
Three routes, in order of how much of your deposit they protect:
- Heavy-duty adhesive strips. Buy for double the fixture's weight, on a fully cured painted surface, cleaned with isopropyl alcohol first. Follow the stated cure time before hanging anything - this is where people fail.
- A single small screw with a plug. One hole, filled and touched up at the end of the tenancy in about five minutes. If the fixture is heavy, this is the honest option and pretending otherwise risks a sconce on the floor.
- Not on the wall at all. Several sconce-shaped fixtures sit on a shelf or clamp to a headboard. If the wall is off-limits entirely, this is the route.
Full method, including how to remove adhesive without taking paint with it, is in no-drill lighting.
03
Placement, by job
- Beside a bed: 30 to 36 inches above the mattress, out from the pillow, aimed down. This is the classic use and it frees the whole nightstand.
- Either side of a mirror: at roughly eye level, so light comes from the sides rather than above. Overhead light on a face produces exactly the shadows you do not want when getting ready.
- In a hallway: a pair at intervals reads far better than one ceiling fixture, and published guidance for hallways is modest, so a couple of small sconces genuinely covers it.
- Beside a reading chair: only with an adjustable arm. A fixed sconce washes the wall attractively and does very little for a page.
The picks

01
The default bulb for almost every lamp in a home
Philips Ultra Definition A19 LED, 60W equivalent, 2700K
#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn
800 lumens at 2700K with a published CRI 95 for the price of an ordinary bulb - the single easiest upgrade in this entire category.
| Lumens | 800 lm |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | 2700K |
| CRI | 95 |
| Power source | Screws into a standard E26 socket (8W) |
| Dimmable | Yes |
| Renter-safe method | It is a bulb. Swap it, keep the old one, put it back when you leave. |
What it gets right
- CRI 95 at a mainstream price, which almost nothing else manages
- 2700K matches the warm light most rooms were designed around
- Dimmable and rated flicker-free
What it costs you
- 800 lumens is one bulb's worth - a dark room needs several
- 2700K is too warm for detailed kitchen task work
- R9 is not published, so deep reds are an unknown

02
The cheapest way into hub-free smart lighting
WiZ WiZ Connected Color A19 Smart Bulb
#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn
Wi-Fi and Matter with no bridge to buy, at roughly the price of two ordinary bulbs - the sensible default when you are lighting a rental you may leave next year.
| Lumens | Not published |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | Tunable white plus color |
| CRI | Not published |
| Power source | Screws into a standard E26 socket |
| Dimmable | Yes - in app |
| Renter-safe method | A bulb swap on your own Wi-Fi. No hub, no wiring, no switch change. |
What it gets right
- No bridge, no hub, nothing extra plugged into the router
- Matter support, so it is not locked to one ecosystem
- Cheap enough to do a whole apartment rather than one room
What it costs you
- Wi-Fi bulbs each take an address on your network
- CRI and lumen figures are not published per SKU
- Anyone flipping the wall switch takes the bulb offline

03
Recessed cans where color accuracy is the whole point
Waveform Lighting Ultra High 95 CRI BR30 LED Bulb
#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn
800 lumens from 10.5W at CRI 95+ with R9 above 80 - and Waveform publishes the R9 figure, which is the number almost every other brand quietly omits.
| Lumens | 800 lm |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | 2700K or 3000K |
| CRI | 95+ (R9 80+) |
| Power source | Screws into a standard E26 socket (10.5W) |
| Dimmable | Yes |
| Renter-safe method | A bulb swap in an existing can. Fully reversible. |
What it gets right
- R9 above 80 is published, so deep reds are actually accounted for
- Two warm color temperatures rather than one compromise
- BR30 shape drops straight into standard recessed cans
What it costs you
- Several times the price of a supermarket BR30
- Sold direct rather than through every retailer
- 800 lumens is standard output, not high output

FAQ
Questions people actually ask
+Can you install a wall sconce without wiring?
Yes. A plug-in sconce has a cord that runs to an ordinary outlet, so it needs no junction box and no electrician. The only thing it needs is a fixing to hold it on the wall, and adhesive mounts avoid even that.
+How do you hang a plug-in sconce without drilling?
Heavy-duty adhesive strips rated well above the fixture's weight, on a clean, fully cured painted surface. Weigh the sconce first, double the rating you buy, and follow the manufacturer's cure time before hanging anything. Lightweight metal and wood sconces are usually within range; heavy ceramic and glass ones are not.
+What should a plug-in sconce weigh for adhesive mounting?
Under about two pounds is comfortable territory for good adhesive strips, and lighter is better. Above that you are relying on a bond in tension near the edge of its rating, which is exactly where adhesive fails. Heavy sconces want a screw, or a different plan.
+Where should sconces go beside a bed?
Roughly 30 to 36 inches above the mattress and far enough out from the pillow that the source is not in the eye line of someone lying down. If the sconce has an adjustable arm, aim it down at the page rather than out into the room.
