What you need
- The fixtures, and the jumper cables if you are linking a run
- Isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth - this is the item people skip
- A tape measure and a pencil
- Adhesive cord channel or cord clips, if the cable will cross a visible surface
No drill, no screws, no stud finder. Total time for a two-bar run is about twenty minutes, most of it waiting for the alcohol to dry.

The six steps
- Measure each cabinet section separately. Runs are rarely one continuous length. Write down each section and pick bar lengths that fit inside them with an inch or two spare at each end for connectors.
- Plan the cord route to the outlet before you stick anything. Decide which end of the run is the powered end, and check the lead actually reaches. This is the step that causes re-dos.
- Degrease the mounting surface. Isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free cloth, over the whole area the pads will touch, then let it dry completely. A damp cloth alone will not do it - kitchen grease is not water-soluble, and this is the single reason adhesive mounts fail.
- Dry-fit with the fixture held in place. Switch it on and hold it at the front edge, then at the back, and look at your counter from where you normally stand. If you can see the fixture reflected in the worktop, move it forward.
- Apply the pads to the fixture, then press for thirty seconds. Firm, even pressure across the whole length. Most adhesive reaches full strength over the following day, so avoid hanging anything from it immediately.
- Route and secure the cord. Down the inside back corner of the cabinet run, then into a channel or behind the backsplash line. Clips every foot or so stop it sagging into view.

Taking them down
Warm the adhesive with a hairdryer on a low setting for twenty to thirty seconds, then pull slowly and parallel to the surface. Pulling straight down is what lifts veneer off a cabinet. Any residue left behind comes away with isopropyl alcohol and patience.
Keep the original packaging with the jumper cables and spare pads in it. Under-cabinet lighting is one of the few improvements a renter can genuinely take to the next place, and the missing part is always the jumper.
