Why plug-in wins in a rental, and often outside one
Hardwiring under-cabinet lighting means opening a wall, running cable and, in most places, a qualified person. In a rental it also means a landlord's written agreement to an electrical alteration. That is a great deal of process for a light under a cupboard.
A plug-in bar delivers the same photons for the cost of a visible cord. And the cord is not permanent either: the good ones are convertible, so if you buy the place, the same fixture can be hardwired later without being replaced.
The one genuine advantage hardwired holds is the absence of that cord, and a wall switch rather than a switch on the fixture. Both are solvable - a cheap smart plug gives a plug-in run voice and app control, and cord channel makes the cable disappear against the wall.

The linking question
Almost every bar here links end to end with short jumper cables, so one plug can feed an entire cabinet run. This is the single biggest practical difference between a tidy installation and a mess, and it is worth checking before you buy:
- How many units can link? Published limits are usually six to eight. Barrina publishes eight for its T5 bars.
- Are jumpers included or extra? Frequently extra, and frequently the reason a cheap multipack stops being cheap.
- Do linked units switch together? Usually yes from the powered end, but several bars also have their own individual switch, which is useful for lighting only the section you are working at.

Mounting without damage
The underside of a wall cabinet is close to an ideal adhesive surface: flat, clean, horizontal, out of sight, and rarely in direct sun. Adhesive mounting here is not a compromise you accept because you rent - it is genuinely the sensible method.
Clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry before applying the pads. Grease from cooking is the usual reason an adhesive mount fails, and a kitchen cabinet underside collects it invisibly. FAQ
Questions people actually ask
+Are plug-in under-cabinet lights as bright as hardwired ones?
Yes. Brightness is a function of the LED module, not the power route, and several of the highest-output and highest-CRI bars in the category are plug-in or convertible. The only real differences are a visible cord and the outlet it has to reach.
+How do I hide the cord?
Down the inside back corner of the cabinet run, then behind the backsplash line or into an adhesive cord channel painted the wall color. Most bars are linkable, so one plug can feed a whole run and there is only one cord to deal with rather than three.
+Will a linkable set overload one outlet?
No. These fixtures draw very little - a 20W bar is a fraction of what a kettle takes - so linking several on one plug is well within an ordinary circuit. Manufacturers publish a maximum number of linked units, usually between six and eight; stay inside it.
+Can I use these somewhere other than a kitchen?
They are excellent under bookshelves, over a desk, inside a wardrobe and along the top of a headboard. The only requirement is a flat underside to mount to and an outlet within cord reach.
