What this page is choosing for
There is no fixture on the ceiling. There may not even be a box up there. You need one lamp to carry the room, and the number that decides whether it can is published lumen output - which most lamp brands quietly do not print.
So the first filter is not style. It is whether the manufacturer will tell you how much light comes out. On the picks below, the ones that publish a figure are ranked above the ones that do not, and where a figure is missing we say so rather than filling the cell in.
The second filter is throw direction. A lamp that points up turns your ceiling into the light source and fills a room. A lamp that points down lights a chair. Both are useful; only one replaces a ceiling fixture. That trade-off is worked through in layered lighting.

How to place it
Put the uplight in the corner diagonally opposite where you usually sit. Two reasons: the light travels the longest path across the ceiling before it comes down, which evens it out, and the lamp itself is never in your eye line.
Uplighting depends on a pale ceiling. A white ceiling gives most of the light back. A dark or wood ceiling absorbs a great deal of it, and in that case a shaded lamp at seated height does more work than a torchiere pointed at a ceiling that will swallow it.
Keep the source out of the reflection path of a television. The classic mistake is a bright uplight behind the sofa reflecting off the screen in exactly the seat you watch from.

+What kind of lamp best replaces a ceiling light?
A torchiere - a tall lamp that throws its light upward at the ceiling. The ceiling then acts as a large, soft emitter and spreads light across the whole room, which is exactly what a ceiling fixture does. A shaded table or floor lamp lights a zone instead, which is useful but is not a replacement.
+How bright does the lamp need to be?
Multiply your floor area in square feet by 10 to 20 footcandles, the published range for living-room ambient light. A 168 square foot room lands between 1,680 and 3,360 lumens. One 2,190-lumen torchiere covers the middle of that on its own, and any other lamps in the room are then a bonus.
+Is an integrated LED lamp or a standard-socket lamp better?
