Choose the torchiere if the room has a pale ceiling and no fixture on it. This is the shape that substitutes for the missing thing.
Choose the arc if there is a specific surface - a dining table, a sofa, a reading corner - that needs light directly above it and there is nowhere to hang anything.
Choose the tripod if you want control over light quality. It takes a standard bulb, so the CRI and color temperature are your decision rather than the manufacturer's.

What the shapes cost you
The torchiere depends on your ceiling
Everything good about an uplight comes from the ceiling being a large, pale reflector. Against a white ceiling it is the most efficient way to fill a room with soft light from one plug. Against a dark, wooden or heavily beamed ceiling, a large share of the output simply disappears, and you would do better with a shaded lamp at seated height.
The arc needs floor you may not have
An arc lamp reaches out three or four feet, so the weighted base sits well back from the surface it lights - often behind a sofa or against a wall. In a small room that clearance is the whole problem. Measure the reach before buying, not the height.
The tripod puts the decision on you
A standard socket is a genuine advantage and a real responsibility. Put an 800-lumen 2700K bulb in it and it is a pleasant accent lamp. Put a 1,500-lumen 95 CRI bulb in it and it does meaningful work. Put whatever was in the drawer in it and you will conclude the lamp is bad when the bulb is.

+Can an arc lamp replace a dining pendant?
Functionally, yes - that is exactly what it is for. An arc lamp reaches out over a table from a weighted base on the floor, putting light where a pendant would hang without touching the ceiling. The constraint is floor space: the base needs somewhere to stand that is not in a walkway.
+Are tripod lamps bright enough to be a main light?
