What a reading lamp is being asked to do

You are never going to reach 50 footcandles on a page by making the whole room brighter - that would be a room lit like a supermarket. The reading lamp exists to deliver a large amount of light to a very small area, which is why aim matters more than raw output.
This is the task layer of layered lighting, and it should be on its own switch. A reading lamp that only comes on when the whole room does is not doing its job.

The three specs, in order
- CRI. The one place on the site where we would pay a premium without hesitating. You are looking closely at something; accurate color is the difference between a page that reads well and one that looks slightly gray. 95 is available, and worth understanding before you buy.
- Aim. An adjustable head or a gooseneck, so the light lands on the page and not on your face. A fixed-head lamp has to be positioned by moving the furniture, which nobody does.
- Dimming range. Not just whether it dims but how low. A lamp whose minimum is still bright is unusable for evening reading in a dark room.
Notice that raw lumens is not on that list. A reading lamp aimed properly at a page needs far less output than a lamp lighting a room, and the brightest reading lamp in a comparison is rarely the best one.

The color temperature trap
Many reading lamps ship with a single fixed daylight tone, because cool light reads as crisp and demos well. In a bedroom at 11pm it is exactly the wrong signal, and it is the most common complaint about otherwise good reading lamps.
Two ways around it. Buy a lamp with switchable color temperature, and set it warm for evenings. Or buy a standard-socket lamp and choose the bulb - which also lets you choose the CRI, and makes a failure a few dollars rather than a new lamp. +How bright should a reading lamp be?
Published guidance puts a reading or desk surface at 50 to 75 footcandles, several times a living room's ambient level. Over a small area that is a modest lumen figure - the trick is aiming it at the page rather than lighting the whole room to that level.
+Where should a reading lamp be positioned?
Beside and slightly behind the shoulder on your non-dominant side, with the light falling onto the page rather than into your eyes. That angle also keeps your own hand and head from shadowing what you are reading.
+Does CRI matter for reading?
For plain black text, not much. For anything with color in it - illustrations, photographs, sheet music, needlework, model making - it matters a great deal, and a CRI 95 lamp makes the same page look considerably better than a CRI 80 one at the same brightness.
+What color temperature is best for reading?
It depends on when. 2700K to 3000K for evening reading, so you are not getting a cool signal an hour before sleep. 3500K to 4000K for daytime work where alertness helps. A single fixed daylight tone is the usual compromise, and it is the wrong one in a bedroom.
