The best arc floor lamps

By Sawyer V. · Last verified September 11, 2026

An arc lamp exists to do one thing: put light over the middle of a sofa or a table without anything standing there. Reach is the whole specification.

Specifications are the manufacturer or retailer published figures, compiled by hand. We have not measured them, and where a figure is not published we write "Not published" rather than guess.

01

Reach is the whole specification

Most lamps light the space around where they stand. An arc lamp is different: its base stands at the edge of the room and the head curves out to hang over something - a sofa, a chair, a coffee table - where no table or floor lamp could go.

That makes reach the specification that decides whether one works. An arc that falls short leaves its light over the arm of the sofa rather than the middle of it, and at that point you have bought an awkward floor lamp.

The comparison against a torchiere and a tripod lamp is in torchiere vs arc vs tripod; the short version is that an arc lights a zone from above, while a torchiere lights the whole room from a corner.

The picks

Brightech Sparq - the pick for a chair or loveseat. An integrated 3000K LED on a 45 inch reach that publishes its output - 680 lumens in black, 850 in silver - with a foot-pedal dimmer stepping 100, 50 and 30 percent, on a weighted 9 inch base. Publishing output is rare for an arc lamp, and the foot pedal means you dim it without leaning over the sofa.
Cons: 45 inches reaches an armchair or loveseat but falls short of the middle of a three-seat sofa; the integrated LED fixes the color temperature; and three dimming steps rather than stepless.

Brightech Trilage - for light over a sofa, with bulbs you choose. Three standard sockets on an arc, so the base stands at the room's edge while the heads reach out over the seating. Standard sockets mean you decide the light - put high-CRI bulbs in it and it beats most integrated-LED lamps on color.
Cons: publishes no output because there is nothing to publish; you buy three bulbs separately; and the heads hang at seated eye height, so they must be dimmable or shaded.

Philips Ultra Definition, 1,500 lm - the bulbs for the Trilage. 1,500 lumens at 2700K with CRI 95. In a three-socket arc, three of these give you far more light than any integrated arc, with excellent color.
Cons: three at 1,500 lm is a lot over a sofa - dimming is essential.

Lutron Credenza plug-in dimmer - to dim a socketed arc. A socketed arc lamp with dimmable bulbs dims through a plug-in dimmer with no wiring.
Cons: it sits at the outlet, not beside the sofa.

03

Clearance, stability and placement

Check the ceiling first. Most arc lamps want at least 8 feet of clearance to arc without the shade touching the ceiling. Under a lower ceiling, the arc either cannot open fully or ends up hanging too low over the seating. In a room with sloped ceilings the arc can be the right answer, reaching out from the tall side - see attic and loft lighting.

Insist on a heavy base. All the weight of the head is cantilevered out over the sofa, so the base is a counterweight. Weighted cast iron or solid steel keeps it standing; a light base is a tipping risk, especially with children or pets.

Hang the head at the right height. Low enough to light the seating, high enough that nobody standing up hits it and nobody seated looks straight into the bulb. The height rules for reading light are in where to put a floor lamp.

Pair it with an uplight. An arc lights the sofa zone; a torchiere in a corner lights the room. Together they cover the ambient and task layers - see best floor lamps for a living room.

An integrated 3000K LED on a 45 inch reach, publishing 680 lumens in black and 850 in silver, with a foot-pedal three-step dimmer - the arc lamp that states its output.

Lumens680 lm (black) or 850 lm (silver)
Color temperature3000K
CRINot published
Power sourcePlugs in (15W integrated LED)
DimmableYes, foot pedal - 100, 50 and 30 percent
Renter-safe methodPlugs in and stands on a weighted base. Nothing fixed.

What it gets right

  • Publishes its output - 680 or 850 lm depending on finish
  • Foot pedal dimming you can operate without leaning over
  • Weighted 9 in. base with a comparatively small footprint

What it costs you

  • 45 in. reach covers an armchair or loveseat, not a three-seat sofa
  • Integrated LED, so the 3000K color temperature is fixed
  • Three dimming steps rather than stepless control

Three shaded heads on an arc, putting light where a pendant would hang without anything touching the ceiling - the closest a plug-in lamp gets to a real fixture.

CRIDepends on the bulbs you fit
Power sourcePlugs in (3 standard sockets)
DimmableWith dimmable bulbs and a plug-in dimmer
Renter-safe methodPlugs into an outlet. Weighted base, no ceiling hook required.

What it gets right

  • Puts light over a table or seating area with no ceiling work
  • Three sockets spread the output instead of one hot spot
  • Standard bulbs, so you set the color temperature

What it costs you

  • The arc needs floor clearance behind the furniture
  • Three bulbs to buy and match
  • Heavier base - not something you move casually

#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn

1,500 lumens from a standard A19 - the first move in any dark room is not a new lamp, it is putting these in the lamps already standing there.

Lumens1,500 lm
Color temperature2700K soft white, or 5000K daylight version
CRI95
Power sourceScrews into a standard E26 socket
DimmableYes
Renter-safe methodIt is a bulb. No fixing, no permission, fully reversible.

What it gets right

  • Nearly double the output of a 60W-equivalent from the same socket
  • CRI 95 holds at the higher output
  • Two existing lamps fitted with these add 3,000 lumens to a room

What it costs you

  • Check the fixture's maximum rating before fitting a brighter bulb
  • Too much for a bedside lamp
  • Enclosed fixtures can shorten the life of any high-output LED

Dimming a lamp with nothing installed in the wall

Lutron Credenza Plug-In Lamp Dimmer (TTCL-100H)

A dimmer that sits on the cord between the lamp and the outlet, rated for 100W of dimmable LED - the only route to real dimming that touches no wiring at all.

Lumensn/a - controls a lamp, does not light
Color temperaturen/a
CRIn/a
Power sourcePlugs in between the lamp and the outlet (6 ft cord)
DimmableThat is the whole product - slide to dim, slide to off
Renter-safe methodPlugs in. No wiring, no switch change, nothing fixed.

What it gets right

  • Rated for 100W of dimmable CFL/LED or 250W incandescent - well beyond any single lamp
  • Lutron's dimming circuitry is designed for high-efficiency bulbs, which is where cheap dimmers fail
  • UL and CSA listed, and it comes with you when you move

What it costs you

  • The bulb still has to be marked dimmable - a plug-in dimmer cannot fix a non-dimmable bulb
  • Sits visibly on the cord, so it wants to be behind furniture
  • One lamp per dimmer

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

+How much reach does an arc floor lamp need?

Enough to get the light over the center of what you are lighting. Published guidance suggests roughly 60 to 70 inches of horizontal reach from the wall for a three-seat sofa, and 50 to 58 inches for a single armchair.

+How much ceiling height does an arc lamp need?

Most arc lamps want at least 8 feet of clearance to arc properly without the shade brushing the ceiling. Check the lamp's total height against your ceiling before buying, not after.

+Are arc lamps stable?

Good ones are, because the base carries a heavy counterweight - weighted cast iron or solid steel. A light base on an arc lamp is a tipping risk, since all the weight is cantilevered out over the seating.

+How bright should an arc lamp be?

For ambient light over seating, published guidance suggests roughly 800 to 1,100 lumens. For reading directly under it, less is often enough because the source is close.

+Arc lamp or torchiere for a living room?

A torchiere lights the whole room by bouncing off the ceiling from a corner. An arc lamp lights a specific zone - the sofa or the table - from above. They do different jobs and often work well together.
