Bulbs, Color & Brightness - Picks

The best G9 LED bulbs for a halogen capsule fixture

By Sawyer V. ยท Last verified November 5, 2026

A G9 LED is wider and longer than the halogen it replaces - one seller publishes both numbers and the gap is 6 mm across. That, not brightness, is what decides whether your chandelier closes.

Specifications are the manufacturer or retailer published figures, compiled by hand. We have not measured them, and where a figure is not published we write "Not published" rather than guess.

01

The short answer

The RuLEDne 5W is the one to buy for a fixture you actually use: 600 lumens at 2700K, CRI 85 or better, UL and cUL listed, dimmable across the full range, and the only G9 bulb here whose listing says it can go in a totally enclosed fixture. If your shade is narrow, the Eco.Luma 6W is 3.5 mm slimmer. If the fixture has never been bright enough, the Geminilite 7W publishes 800 lumens, which is the most we could find in this base - and it is the largest body, so measure first.

Here is the part almost every G9 page gets wrong. The question is not which bulb is brightest. It is whether the bulb will physically fit, because a G9 LED is not the same size as the halogen capsule it replaces, and the fixtures that use this base are the least forgiving in the house - small glass shades on chandeliers, sconces and vanity bars, built around a capsule the size of a pencil eraser.

One of the sellers here publishes both figures in the same sentence, against its own interest: its LED is 19 x 54 mm, and a halogen G9 is 12.7 x 43 mm. That is about 6 mm wider and 11 mm longer. In a shade with a few millimeters of clearance, that is the whole ballgame - and it is why the picks below are ranked with their dimensions on the table rather than buried.

The good news is that this is a genuinely worthwhile swap. A halogen capsule is the hottest, shortest-lived bulb left in most homes, and the LED versions are cheap, instant-on and available in warm colors. You just have to buy one that fits.

The picks, with the dimension most listings bury. A halogen G9 capsule is about 12.7 x 43 mm.

02

How these were judged

G9 is a crowded, thinly documented format full of near-identical listings, so the criteria are about which numbers a seller is willing to print. Five things, in this order.

  1. Published dimensions. First criterion, because it is the one that decides whether the purchase was a waste. Every pick here publishes a diameter and a height; plenty of G9 listings publish neither, and those were excluded regardless of how good the rest of the specification looked.
  2. Dimming, stated explicitly. This is the most-searched attribute of the base and the format is split roughly evenly. A listing that names the dimmer brands it works with is worth more than one that just says dimmable - the compatibility problem is real and is covered in LED dimmer compatibility.
  3. A safety listing, and an enclosed rating if you can get one. UL, cUL or ETL. G9 fixtures are usually small sealed glass, which is the hardest thermal environment a bulb faces, and exactly one pick here publishes a rating for a totally enclosed fixture. Why that matters is in the best LED bulbs for enclosed fixtures.
  4. Published CRI. These fixtures hang over dining tables and beside bathroom mirrors, which are the two places color rendering is most visible. Four of these publish a figure and one does not.
  5. Honest output, read in lumens. The equivalence claims in this base are wild - the same 4W bulb gets sold as a 20W, 25W, 30W and 40W replacement depending on the listing. Lumens are the only comparable number, and the reasoning is in lumens vs watts.

We did not install or measure these. Every figure on this page is the retailer listing's own, linked in the sources below, and where a listing publishes nothing we have written that rather than estimating it.

03

The picks

RuLEDne 5W, 2700K - the pick. 600 lumens at 2700K with CRI 85 or better, UL and cUL listed, dimmable from 0 to 100 percent with Leviton and Lutron named on the listing, a fireproof ceramic body, and driver protection against overload, short circuit and over-temperature. It is also the only one here rated for damp locations and, per its own listing, for totally enclosed fixtures - which is what a crystal chandelier shade is. No other G9 listing we read published that combination.
Who it is for: a chandelier, a sconce or a vanity bar in daily use, especially on a dimmer or behind sealed glass. Who should skip it: anyone whose shade is tight across - at 19 mm this is the second-widest bulb here.
Cons: 19 mm across against the halogen's 12.7 mm, and 54 mm long against 43 mm, so it needs real clearance; five per pack, and a chandelier often wants more than five.

Eco.Luma 6W, 3000K - the slimmest of the bright ones. 15.5 mm across, which is the narrowest bright G9 we found and only about 3 mm fatter than the halogen capsule. CRI above 85, UL listed, dimmable across the full range with a flicker-free and low-noise claim, and the longest published endurance figures here - 30,000 hours plus 15,000 on-off cycles, which matters on a fixture that gets switched every time someone walks past.
Who it is for: a narrow glass shade or a tight pendant where the wider bulbs bind. Who should skip it: anyone whose fixture is shallow rather than narrow - at 62.3 mm this is the longest bulb on the page, so it trades one fit problem for the other.
Cons: 3000K rather than 2700K, which reads cooler in a chandelier than most people want; no enclosed-fixture or damp rating published; 540 lm if you needed output.

Geminilite 7W, 800 lm - the brightest in the base. 800 lumens at 2700K from a G9 is the highest figure we could find published in this base anywhere, and it is a genuine 70W-halogen replacement rather than an optimistic 40W one. The 360-degree beam angle is published too, which matters in a clear shade that is lit from every side.
Who it is for: a bathroom vanity bar that has always been too dim, or a chandelier doing a dining room on its own. Who should skip it: anyone with a small shade. At 18 x 63.5 mm this is the largest envelope here and there is no version of this that fits a tight fitting.
Cons: the biggest bulb on the page; no CRI published at all, which is a real gap over a mirror; 20,000 hours is the shortest rated life of the picks; and the warranty field on the listing reads as not applicable.

BAOMING 4W, 2700K - the one most likely to just fit. 17 x 49 mm is the smallest body here and the closest of any pick to the halogen capsule's own 12.7 x 43 mm, which makes it the safe answer when you cannot get at the fixture to measure it. Dimmable across the full range, flicker-free per the listing, on a ceramic substrate, with a two-year warranty.
Who it is for: a close-fitting shade, a multi-arm chandelier where every millimeter is contested, or a replacement bought without a tape measure. Who should skip it: anyone who needs the room brighter - 450 lumens is a 40W halogen and no more.
Cons: half the output of the brightest pick; CRI given only as above 80 where others publish 85; the listing contradicts itself on rated life, claiming 25,000 hours in one bullet and 35,000 in another; and no safety listing or enclosed rating is claimed.

TJOY 4W, 6000K - for a workspace, not a living room. 450 lumens of 6000K daylight with CRI above 85 and a fire-resistant ceramic base, at about 17 x 50 mm. G9 fittings turn up in places that are not decorative - a utility pendant, a workshop sconce, a cabinet fitting - and this is the one for those.
Who it is for: a garage, a utility room, a laundry or a work area on a plain switch. Who should skip it: everyone with a chandelier. 6000K in a crystal fixture looks like a fault, and the case is in daylight bulbs.
Cons: non-dimmable, which rules out most decorative circuits; 6000K is colder than much of what gets sold as daylight; 15,000 hours is the shortest life here; and the after-sales cover is a year where most of these offer two.

04

Why the swap goes wrong

Three failures account for most unhappy G9 upgrades, and all three are predictable before you order.

It does not fit. The pins go in - they always go in - and then the shade will not seat, or the bulb fouls the arm next to it. This is the one to design out with a tape measure, and it is why every pick here publishes both dimensions.

It flickers or buzzes on the dimmer. A halogen capsule dims on anything because it is a filament. An LED needs a dimmer that suits it, and a non-dimmable LED on any dimmer will misbehave. One of the five picks here is non-dimmable and says so plainly; the trap is the dozens of G9 listings that say nothing either way.

It dies early in sealed glass. A small enclosed shade was designed around a bulb that gets very hot and does not mind; an LED driver minds a great deal. This is where an enclosed-fixture rating earns its place, and where a ceramic body beats a plastic one.

None of those three is about brightness or color, which is where most of the shopping attention goes. Fit, dimming and heat decide whether the bulb is still working in a year.

05

Two questions the listings do not answer

What does T4 mean? Every G9 listing says it and almost none explains it. T is the shape - tubular - and the number is the diameter in eighths of an inch, the same convention that names a C9 Christmas bulb and a T8 fluorescent tube. So T4 is four eighths, half an inch, 12.7 mm. That is worth knowing because it is exactly the halogen capsule's published diameter, which means a bulb honestly described as T4 should be capsule-width - and most of the LEDs sold as T4 are wider than that. Treat T4 on a G9 listing as a shape family rather than a measurement, and read the millimeter figure instead. The naming system in full is in bulb shapes and bases.

Is there a smart G9? Yes, but not from the big ecosystems. Philips Hue does not make one - searching for a Hue G9 returns its GU10 spotlight instead, which is a different base entirely. What does exist is third-party: Bluetooth tunable-white G9s that run 2700K to 6500K from an app, and Wi-Fi RGB versions that work with Alexa and Google Home, generally at two to four times the price of a plain dimmable G9 and in smaller packs. They are not featured above because we have not held them to the same criteria as the picks, but they are real and purchasable if you want them.

Before buying five of them for a chandelier, though, consider what that fixture becomes: five radios inside one glass shade, each needing to be paired, grouped and kept on firmware. For a decorative fitting on a wall dimmer, a plain dimmable bulb and a good dimmer is the simpler machine - the comparison is in smart bulbs vs smart switches.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

+What is a G9 bulb?

A small bulb with two looped wire pins 9 mm apart that push straight into the socket - no screw thread and no twist. The number in the name is the pin spacing, the same convention as GU10 at 10 mm and GU24 at 24 mm. G9 is the halogen capsule base, so it turns up in crystal chandeliers, wall sconces, bathroom vanity bars and pendant clusters rather than in ceiling domes.

+Are G9 LED bulbs the same size as G9 halogen bulbs?

No, and this is the thing that catches people out. One seller here publishes both figures side by side: its LED is 19 x 54 mm where the halogen capsule is 12.7 x 43 mm. So the LED is about 6 mm wider and 11 mm longer, and in a close-fitting glass shade that is the difference between the shade closing and not. Measure the space before you order, because the pins will always fit and the body may not.

+Are G9 LED bulbs dimmable?

Some are and some are not, and the format is split almost evenly - of the five bulbs on this page, four dim and one explicitly does not. Dimming is also the most-searched thing about this base, so check the listing rather than assuming. Where a listing names the dimmer brands it has been tested against, that is worth more than a bare claim.

+Can you put an LED bulb in a halogen chandelier?

Usually yes, and it is a sensible upgrade - the pins are the same and no wiring changes. Two things decide whether it works: physical room for a slightly larger body, and whether the fixture is on a dimmer that the new bulb can handle. A halogen capsule dims on anything; an LED dims only if it says it does, on a dimmer that suits it.

+How bright is a G9 LED bulb?

The range on this page runs from 450 to 800 lumens, which is roughly a 40W to a 70W halogen capsule. The 800 lumen option is the brightest G9 figure we could find published anywhere, and it is also the largest bulb here - in this base, output and physical size move together, so a small shade caps your brightness whether you like it or not.

+Why do my G9 LED bulbs keep failing?

Heat is the usual answer. A G9 fixture is typically a small enclosed glass shade built to shed the heat of a halogen capsule, which runs hot but tolerates it; an LED runs cooler overall but its driver does not like being cooked. Only one bulb on this page publishes a rating for a totally enclosed fixture, so if yours is sealed glass that figure matters more than the lumen count.
