Outlet planning

A room with a ceiling fixture has its main light source fixed at the one point the builder chose, and everything else is optional. A room without one is the opposite: every light in it plugs in, which means the sockets decide what is possible.

This gets discovered in the wrong order constantly. Somebody identifies a dark corner, buys a lamp for it, brings it home and finds the nearest outlet is on the other side of the room. What follows is an extension lead across a walkway, or a lamp standing somewhere it was not meant to go.

Twenty minutes of mapping avoids all of it, and it frequently changes which lamp is the right one to buy.

Sketch the room. It does not need to be to scale - a rectangle with the door and the window marked is enough. Then add four things.

1. Every outlet, including ones behind furniture. Mark which is switched, using the test in switched outlets.
2. A 4 ft circle around each one. That is where a standard-corded lamp can actually stand.
3. Walking routes - door to sofa, door to bed, sofa to kitchen. No cord may cross these.
4. Where light needs to be, from the layer plan in layered lighting: ambient in a corner, task beside a chair, accent wherever you want it.

Now look at the overlaps. Where a needed light position falls inside an outlet circle and off a walking route, that is a lamp you can buy today. Where it does not, you have a decision to make - and it is far better made on paper than in a shop.

Electrically, a single outlet will run far more LED lighting than you are likely to put on it - a 2,190 lumen torchiere draws about 30W, and several of those together are still a trivial load. The constraint is physical, not electrical.

Prefer linkable products. An Enbrighten light bar chains additional units from a single plug, which turns one socket into a run of task lighting along a counter or a shelf. Plan the direction of the chain before mounting the first unit, because reversing it later means redoing the whole run.

Prefer socketed lamps for flexibility. A lamp like the Brightech Eden takes a standard E26 bulb, so if a position turns out to need more light you change the bulb rather than the lamp. In a room where positions are constrained by sockets, that flexibility is worth more than it is elsewhere.

Put the control where you walk in, not where the lamp is. A wireless remote by the door means the lamp can live wherever the outlet dictates while the switch lives where you need it. This is the single change that makes an outlet-constrained room feel designed rather than improvised.
