Do step one before deciding whether you need the rest. It is the cheapest change in lighting and it frequently closes most of the gap on its own, which changes what the later steps have to achieve.

Room by room, briefly
Living space

Bedroom

Kitchen

Hallway and entry
Published at 5 to 10 footcandles, so this is the one place you can genuinely under-spend. Match the color temperature to the rooms either side of it and move on.
Bathroom
Usually the one room with an adequate existing fixture. The upgrade that matters is the bulb: 3000K at CRI 90+ makes a real difference at a mirror, and costs the price of a bulb.

Leaving
- Keep the original bulbs in a labeled box from the day you swap them. This is the thing everyone forgets and it is the only part that is genuinely irreversible if you throw them away.
- Warm adhesive before removing it and pull parallel to the surface, never straight out. Twenty seconds with a hairdryer is the difference between clean paint and a repair.
- Factory reset every smart device so it is not bound to your account or carrying your Wi-Fi credentials.
- Fill and touch up any hole from a sconce or a pendant hook. Five minutes, and it is what the make-good clause is about.

Usually a combination of low-output bulbs in the fixtures that exist, and rooms with no ceiling fixture at all. Read the lumen figure on your bulbs first - three lamps with 600-lumen bulbs is under 2,000 lumens, which is below the published minimum for a mid-sized living room.
+How do I light an apartment without drilling?
Everything can plug in. Floor lamps and table lamps need only an outlet; under-cabinet bars mount with adhesive; wall sconces mount with heavy-duty adhesive strips if they are light enough. The only thing that genuinely wants a fixing is a ceiling-hung pendant.
