Switched outlets

Walk into a living room or bedroom with no ceiling fixture and there is usually still a light switch beside the door. People flip it, nothing happens, and they conclude it is a leftover from a fixture somebody removed.

Occasionally that is true. Far more often the switch is working exactly as designed and controlling an outlet somewhere in the room - because that is how rooms without ceiling fixtures were built. The intent was that you plug a lamp in, and the switch by the door operates it, giving you the thing a ceiling fixture would have given you.

This matters because it is free. If a switched outlet exists, you already have a wall switch controlling a lamp, and none of the workarounds elsewhere on this site are needed. Finding it takes about two minutes.

You need a lamp you know works. A small table lamp is easiest because you can carry it one-handed.

1. Turn the wall switch on. Leave it on for the whole test - you are looking for outlets that are live only in this position.
2. Plug the lamp into the top socket of the first outlet. Note whether it lights.
3. Move it to the bottom socket of the same outlet. This is the step people skip, and half-hot wiring is the most common arrangement of the three, so skipping it is how the switched outlet goes undiscovered.
4. Repeat around the room, including outlets behind furniture, which is exactly where builders liked to put the switched one.
5. When the lamp lights, flip the switch off to confirm the lamp goes out. That is your switched socket.

Once found, put your main ambient light there. In a room with no ceiling fixture, that generally means a 2,190 lumen torchiere in a corner, which is the format that fills a room from a single socket. Position it using the corner rule from where to put a floor lamp, and if the lamp takes a standard socket put a CRI 95 bulb at 800 lumens in it so the light quality is yours to choose.

Sometimes the test finds nothing, and the room genuinely has no switched socket. Making one is electrical work on the building, which puts it in the permission tier described in can you change a light fixture in an apartment. There are two ways around it that touch nothing.

A wireless remote. A battery wall remote mounts beside the door exactly where the switch should have been, drives up to ten paired devices, and Lutron publishes a ten-year typical battery life. Paired with a plug-in dimmer or a smart bulb, it gives you door-side control of a lamp across the room - and unlike a real switch, you can move it after a week if the position turns out to be wrong. A smart plug on a schedule. A smart plug between the lamp and the outlet means the lamp comes on at sunset whether or not anyone operates anything, which for a living room is frequently better than a switch. Keep a physical control as well - the argument is in schedules and automations.

Either way, do the two-minute test first. It costs nothing and it quite often means you need neither.
