Every smart bulb ever made shares one flaw, and no amount of money fixes it: the bulb needs constant power to stay on the network. Cut power at the wall switch and the bulb is not dimmed or scheduled - it is unreachable, and the app cannot bring it back until someone flips the switch again.

In a home you share with other people this is a daily event rather than a theoretical one. Everyone has thirty years of habit telling them the light is controlled by the thing on the wall, and no amount of explaining changes that.

A wireless remote resolves it by putting something on the wall that is the control. It sticks beside the real switch, it needs no wiring, and it gives guests and housemates the obvious thing to press. It is the cheapest component in smart lighting and the one that decides whether the rest of it works.

The Lutron Pico is the pick because of the battery figure and the device count - one remote driving up to ten Caseta dimmers and switches, with a ten-year typical battery life published, and no new wiring anywhere. The catch is the ecosystem row: it drives Lutron hardware, so it is only worth anything alongside something like the Caseta plug-in dimmer.

If your smart lighting is bulbs and plugs from a different family, look for that family's own button rather than assuming a remote is universal. Most are not.

Beside the switch it is replacing in habit, not somewhere tidier. The entire job is intercepting the reflex to reach for the wall, and a remote two feet away in a nicer spot does not do that.
