The best bedside lamps

By Sawyer V. · Last verified September 9, 2026

The specification that decides this is not how bright it gets. It is how low.

Specifications are the manufacturer or retailer published figures, compiled by hand. We have not measured them, and where a figure is not published we write "Not published" rather than guess.

01

Two people, two different plans

Almost every lamp on this site is judged on how much light it produces. A bedside lamp is the exception, because it usually has to satisfy two conflicting requirements in the same room at the same moment.

One person wants to read - light on a page, not much of it, but aimed. The other wants to sleep, which means light anywhere near their face is a problem. A lamp that is merely dim fails both: too dark to read comfortably, still bright enough to be annoying.

So the two specifications that matter here are unusual ones: how low the dimming goes, and how well the light can be aimed. Peak output barely features.

Four ways to solve the bedside problem.

The picks

Glocusent clip-on reading light - the pick for a shared bed. CRI 90+ is unusual in a clip light, and ten brightness levels means the lowest is genuinely low rather than nominally low. It clips to a headboard edge up to about 1.6 inches and runs from USB, so it needs no table and no wall outlet if you have a power bank. Aimed at a page, it lights the page and almost nothing else.
Cons: no lumen figure published; a 1.6 inch clip will not grip a thick or upholstered headboard; and at 3.5W it is a reading light, not a room light.

A tunable smart bulb in the lamp you already own - the cheapest good answer. Bedside lamps are usually chosen for how they look, and swapping the bulb keeps that. A tunable bulb gives a warm bright reading setting and a very dim warm one for the middle of the night, both without getting out of bed - and the dim scene on a good smart bulb goes lower than most mechanical dimmers manage.
Cons: no published lumens or CRI; it needs the wall switch left on; and it puts an app between you and a light at 3am.

Philips Ultra Definition A19 - if you would rather not have an app by the bed. 800 lumens at 2700K with CRI 95, dimmable with any compatible dimmer. Put it on a plug-in dimmer and you have a physically-controlled bedside lamp with better color than any smart bulb here.
Cons: the dimmer is a second purchase, and mechanical dimmers rarely go as low as a smart bulb's dimmest scene.

A smart plug - for the schedule rather than the dimming. It cannot dim, but it can make the lamp come on at sunset and go off at a fixed time without anybody deciding to do it - see schedules and automations.
Cons: on and off only, and its physical button is at floor level behind furniture.

03

Height, reach and the switch you can find

Shade bottom near seated eye level. Sitting up in bed, your eyes are roughly 24 to 30 inches above the mattress. A lamp whose shade bottom sits above that line puts the bulb in your eyeline every time you look up.

Reach matters more than footprint. A bedside table is small and already holds a phone, a glass and a book. A clip or a swing arm gets the light over the page without occupying the surface - the format is in swing-arm and clamp lamps.

Put the switch where a hand lands in the dark. A switch on the cord halfway to the floor is a design failure at 3am. An in-line cord switch, a touch base or a wireless remote on the headboard all solve it - see cord, foot and inline switches. This is the detail people notice every night and almost nobody checks before buying.

Warm, and lower than usual. 2700K is the site default and a bedside lamp is the one fitting where going warmer still is defensible. What is not defensible is anything above 3000K next to a pillow - see best bulbs for a bedroom.

A headboard, where the light must not reach the other pillow

Glocusent Clip-On Reading Light, 3.5W

#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn

CRI 90+ and ten brightness levels from a clip that opens 1.6 inches and runs off USB - small, aimable, and genuinely dim at the bottom of its range.

LumensNot published
Color temperature3000K-6500K, 3 modes
CRI90+
Power sourceUSB
DimmableYes, 10 levels
Renter-safe methodClips to an edge up to about 1.6 in. No outlet needed with a power bank.

What it gets right

  • CRI 90+ in a clip light, which the category is not known for
  • Ten levels means the lowest is genuinely low - the point beside a sleeping partner
  • USB power, so a battery pack works as well as an outlet

What it costs you

  • No lumen figure published
  • A 1.6 in. clip will not grip a thick desk or a wide headboard rail
  • 3.5W is a reading light, not a room light

Wi-Fi and Matter with no bridge to buy, at roughly the price of two ordinary bulbs - the sensible default when you are lighting a rental you may leave next year.

LumensNot published
Color temperatureTunable white plus color
CRINot published
Power sourceScrews into a standard E26 socket
DimmableYes - in app
Renter-safe methodA bulb swap on your own Wi-Fi. No hub, no wiring, no switch change.

What it gets right

  • No bridge, no hub, nothing extra plugged into the router
  • Matter support, so it is not locked to one ecosystem
  • Cheap enough to do a whole apartment rather than one room

What it costs you

  • Wi-Fi bulbs each take an address on your network
  • CRI and lumen figures are not published per SKU
  • Anyone flipping the wall switch takes the bulb offline

The default bulb for almost every lamp in a home

Philips Ultra Definition A19 LED, 60W equivalent, 2700K

#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn

800 lumens at 2700K with a published CRI 95 for the price of an ordinary bulb - the single easiest upgrade in this entire category.

Lumens800 lm
Color temperature2700K
CRI95
Power sourceScrews into a standard E26 socket (8W)
DimmableYes
Renter-safe methodIt is a bulb. Swap it, keep the old one, put it back when you leave.

What it gets right

  • CRI 95 at a mainstream price, which almost nothing else manages
  • 2700K matches the warm light most rooms were designed around
  • Dimmable and rated flicker-free

What it costs you

  • 800 lumens is one bulb's worth - a dark room needs several
  • 2700K is too warm for detailed kitchen task work
  • R9 is not published, so deep reds are an unknown

Renter-safe methodPlugs in. No wiring, nothing fixed, comes with you.

What it gets right

  • Energy monitoring with a clearer dashboard than the older app
  • Matter support, so it is not tied to one ecosystem
  • Compact enough not to block the second socket on most outlets

What it costs you

  • Another vendor app and account if you already use a different one
  • Switching only - no dimming
  • Consumption figures on budget plugs are within a few percent, not exact

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

+How bright should a bedside lamp be?

Bright enough to read by and dim enough to leave on beside someone asleep, which is a range rather than a number. Around 400 to 800 lumens at the top covers reading; what matters far more is that the bottom of the range is genuinely low.

+What is the best bedside lamp for reading in bed?

One with light you can aim. A clip-on or swing-arm puts light on the page without lighting the whole bed, which is the difference between reading beside a sleeping partner and not being able to.

+Should a bedside lamp be warm or cool?

Warm - 2700K or lower. This is the last light you look at before sleeping, and it is the one place on this site where going below 2700K is defensible.

+What if there is no bedside table or outlet?

Clip to the headboard, or use a USB light running from a power bank. Both remove the constraint rather than working around it, and neither involves drilling anything.

+Are smart bulbs good for bedside lamps?

It is one of their best applications. A tunable bulb in a lamp you already own gives a bright warm setting for reading and a very dim one for the middle of the night, and a schedule can drop it at bedtime automatically.
