01
The mistake this page exists to fix
Here is what happens in most homes. Someone buys a multipack of bulbs, and the brightest, coolest ones go where they seem most needed - the bedside lamp, because that is where you read. So the last light you look at before sleeping is a 5000K daylight bulb at 1,500 lumens, twelve inches from your face.
It is exactly backwards. Cool light does not produce more light than warm light at the same lumen rating - it reads as sharper, which is useful over a kitchen counter and actively unhelpful an hour before sleep. And 1,500 lumens at close range is glare, not reading light.
The fix costs one bulb: 800 lumens, 2700K, dimmable, CRI 90 or better. If you own a bedside lamp with a daylight bulb in it, change that before buying anything else on this site.
02
What to buy, by position
| Position | Lumens | Kelvin | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedside lamp | 800 lm | 2700K | Dimmable is more important than bright |
| Ambient corner lamp | 800 - 1,500 lm | 2700K | Dimmable. Rarely used at full. |
| Reading light, aimed | 800 lm, aimed | 2700K - 3000K | CRI 90+ matters here |
| Closet or wardrobe | Whatever fits | 3000K - 4000K | Task color, brief use, nobody relaxes in a closet |
| Night light | Under 100 lm | 2200K - 2700K | Low and warm, out of the eye line |
The Philips Ultra Definition A19 is the straightforward answer for the first three rows: 800 lumens, 2700K, published CRI 95, dimmable, at supermarket pricing. Where a recessed can over the bed needs a reflector shape, the Waveform 95 CRI BR30 publishes an R9 figure as well.
03
The switching problem, and the bulb that solves it
Most rented bedrooms have no switched socket beside the bed, which means getting up to turn a lamp off, or reaching behind a nightstand for a cord switch in the dark. It is a small daily annoyance and it is the reason smart bulbs earn their place here more than anywhere else in a home.
A WiZ Connected A19 or a Sengled Matter bulb screws into the lamp you already own, dims electronically with no dimmer in the wall, and can be scheduled to go warm and low in the evening. No wiring, no permission, and it comes with you - the full picture is in best smart bulbs without a hub.
The picks
Every pick in full
01
The default bulb for almost every lamp in a home
Philips Ultra Definition A19 LED, 60W equivalent, 2700K
#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn
800 lumens at 2700K with a published CRI 95 for the price of an ordinary bulb - the single easiest upgrade in this entire category.
| Lumens | 800 lm |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | 2700K |
| CRI | 95 |
| Power source | Screws into a standard E26 socket (8W) |
| Dimmable | Yes |
| Renter-safe method | It is a bulb. Swap it, keep the old one, put it back when you leave. |
What it gets right
- CRI 95 at a mainstream price, which almost nothing else manages
- 2700K matches the warm light most rooms were designed around
- Dimmable and rated flicker-free
What it costs you
- 800 lumens is one bulb's worth - a dark room needs several
- 2700K is too warm for detailed kitchen task work
- R9 is not published, so deep reds are an unknown

02
The cheapest way into hub-free smart lighting
WiZ WiZ Connected Color A19 Smart Bulb
#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn
Wi-Fi and Matter with no bridge to buy, at roughly the price of two ordinary bulbs - the sensible default when you are lighting a rental you may leave next year.
| Lumens | Not published |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | Tunable white plus color |
| CRI | Not published |
| Power source | Screws into a standard E26 socket |
| Dimmable | Yes - in app |
| Renter-safe method | A bulb swap on your own Wi-Fi. No hub, no wiring, no switch change. |
What it gets right
- No bridge, no hub, nothing extra plugged into the router
- Matter support, so it is not locked to one ecosystem
- Cheap enough to do a whole apartment rather than one room
What it costs you
- Wi-Fi bulbs each take an address on your network
- CRI and lumen figures are not published per SKU
- Anyone flipping the wall switch takes the bulb offline

Matter-first homes that want no vendor lock-in
Sengled Matter LED Smart Light Bulb
#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn
A Matter bulb with no hub, which means it answers to Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa on equal terms instead of picking a side for you.

|---|---|
| Color temperature | Tunable white |
| CRI | Not published |
| Power source | Screws into a standard E26 socket |
| Dimmable | Yes - in app |

What it gets right

Recessed cans where color accuracy is the whole point
Waveform Lighting Ultra High 95 CRI BR30 LED Bulb
#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn
800 lumens from 10.5W at CRI 95+ with R9 above 80 - and Waveform publishes the R9 figure, which is the number almost every other brand quietly omits.
| Lumens | 800 lm |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | 2700K or 3000K |
| CRI | 95+ (R9 80+) |
| Power source | Screws into a standard E26 socket (10.5W) |
| Dimmable | Yes |
| Renter-safe method | A bulb swap in an existing can. Fully reversible. |
What it gets right
- R9 above 80 is published, so deep reds are actually accounted for
- Two warm color temperatures rather than one compromise
- BR30 shape drops straight into standard recessed cans
What it costs you
- Several times the price of a supermarket BR30
- Sold direct rather than through every retailer
- 800 lumens is standard output, not high output

FAQ
Questions people actually ask
+What is the best light bulb for a bedroom?
An 800 lumen A19 at 2700K with CRI 90 or better, dimmable. Warm and modest beats bright in this room, and dimming matters more than maximum output because a bedside lamp is used at full brightness for finding things and at maybe ten percent for reading in bed.
+Should bedroom bulbs be warm or cool?
Warm - 2700K or below for anything used in the evening. Cool light in the hour before sleep is the wrong signal, and a daylight bulb in a bedside lamp is the single most common bulb mistake in a home.
+How bright should a bedside lamp bulb be?
800 lumens is plenty if it dims. The bedroom's published range of 20 to 50 footcandles covers dressing and reading, not the ambient level - so light the room at the bottom of the range and add aimed task light rather than putting a very bright bulb next to your pillow.
+Are smart bulbs worth it in a bedroom?
This is the strongest case for one in a home. Most rented bedrooms have no switched socket by the bed, so the lamp has to be reached and twisted. A hub-free smart bulb solves that for the price of a bulb, dims without a wall dimmer, and can go warm on a schedule.
+Should I use a color changing bulb by the bed?
Only if you want color for its own sake. Color bulbs give up white-light quality to fit colored emitters and are dimmer in plain white mode than an equivalent white bulb. If the lamp is genuinely used for reading, buy tunable white instead.
