The best swing-arm and clamp lamps

Most of this site is an argument about what you are allowed to attach to a building. Adhesive comes off but may take paint. Screws leave holes. Even a plug-in wall sconce usually ends up fixed to something.

A clamp lamp sidesteps the whole argument. It grips a piece of your own furniture - a desk edge, a shelf, a headboard, a workbench - and holds a light source out over the surface. Nothing touches the building, and the whole assembly unclips in four seconds when you move.

It also solves a problem that has nothing to do with renting: a desk lamp with a base occupies the part of the desk you most want to use. A clamp lamp occupies the edge.

The format's weakness is familiar. Almost nothing in the category publishes a lumen figure, so most of it is sold on watts, LED counts and photographs. The picks below are the ones that publish something checkable.

Measure the edge, not the desk. The relevant number is the thickness of the specific edge you intend to clamp, at the point you intend to clamp it. A 1 inch desk surface with a 2 inch reinforcing rail underneath is a 2 inch edge wherever that rail runs.

Check clearance behind. A clamp has to close around the edge, so something must fit underneath. A desk pushed hard against a wall, a drawer unit directly beneath, or a lip on the underside can all make an otherwise suitable edge unusable.

Check reach against depth. An arm that reaches 18 inches does not cover a 30 inch deep desk. This is where the long-arm architect format earns its keep.

Then the failure no spec sheet mentions: the arm stops holding position. An articulated arm holds a heavy head in mid-air using friction joints or a spring balance. Friction joints wear and springs lose tension, so after six months to two years a cheap swing arm starts drifting downward under its own weight. Look for joints with adjustable tension you can re-tighten, prefer a lighter head, and be suspicious of very long arms carrying very large heads.
