The desk row is marked task-area-only for the same reason the kitchen counter row is on the kitchen page: you cannot light 120 square feet to 75 footcandles without producing a room that feels like a supermarket aisle. You light the room adequately and then aim a lamp at the desk.

Glare, which is the actual complaint

Most home office lighting problems are reported as eye strain and are really glare geometry. There are three sources of it and each has a placement fix:

  • The lamp in your eye line. A lamp behind or beside the monitor at head height sits in your field of view for eight hours. Drop it lower and aim it at the desk.
  • The lamp reflected in the screen. A light behind you bounces straight off the display. Move it to the side of the desk, not behind the chair.
  • The contrast between screen and wall. A bright monitor against a dark wall makes your eyes re-adapt constantly. A low bias light behind the screen fixes it for a few dollars.

A lamp with a wide asymmetric spread rather than a narrow cone helps with all three, which is the argument for something like the BenQ e-Reading lamp over a conventional gooseneck. If color accuracy on paper matters more than screen work, the OttLite ClearSun publishes CRI 95+ and costs less.

The one room where tunable white pays

Everywhere else on this site we are lukewarm about tunable-white bulbs, because most people set them once and never touch them. A home office is the exception, and the reason is that the room has two genuinely different jobs at two different times of day.

At 10am you want 4000K, which reads as alert and matches the daylight coming in. At 9pm, if the room is also where you read, 4000K is the wrong signal entirely. A tunable bulb such as the WiZ Connected A19 covers both from one socket with no wiring, and a schedule means you never think about it.

+How many lumens does a home office need?

Two figures. General room light at 20 to 50 footcandles - roughly 2,400 to 6,000 lumens for a 120 square foot room - plus a desk surface at 50 to 75 footcandles. The desk figure applies to the desk only, and you hit it by aiming a task lamp rather than by brightening the ceiling.

+What color temperature is best for a home office?

3500K to 4000K during working hours, dropping warmer in the evening if the room is also used to relax. This is the strongest case in a home for a tunable-white bulb, because one socket covers both without a compromise setting.

+Where should a desk lamp go to avoid screen glare?

To the side of the monitor, aimed at the desk surface rather than at you or the screen. A lamp behind the monitor puts a bright source in your eye line all day; a lamp behind you reflects off the screen. Side placement, angled down, solves both.

+Do I need a light behind my monitor?

A low-output bias light behind the screen is worth having. It reduces the contrast between a bright monitor and a dark wall, which is the specific thing that tires eyes over a long session. Under 300 lumens is plenty - this is not a task light.
