Specifications are the manufacturer or retailer published figures, compiled by hand. We have not measured them, and where a figure is not published we write "Not published" rather than guess.
01
The verdict
On a single-pole circuit, buy the Kasa KS225 - it does the same job for roughly half the money and it speaks Matter. On a 3-way circuit, buy the Leviton D26HD, which handles two switch locations wired or wirelessly in one switch and keeps Matter while doing it. If your switch box has no neutral wire, neither of these is your answer and no amount of comparing will change that.
This comparison gets written up as a brand rivalry and it is really a wiring question with a brand attached. Strip away the apps and these two dimmers agree on almost everything that usually separates smart switches: both need a neutral, both run on your own Wi-Fi with no hub, both list Matter, and both put control at the wall so the light still works when somebody flips the switch out of habit.
What they genuinely disagree about is what happens when a light is switched from two places - and that disagreement is worth more than the price gap.
02
The check that comes before either of them
Both switches on this page, and the Kasa 3-way kit, require a neutral wire. That is the gate, and it is worth five minutes before any of the rest of this matters.
Leviton publishes the test and it is the clearest version we have found: with the breaker off, look in the switch box. Two cable bundles arriving, with the white wires tied together behind the switch, usually means you have a neutral. One bundle, with a black on one terminal and a white on the other, means that white is a switched hot - there is a white wire, and it is not a neutral.
Houses wired before the mid-1980s frequently have no neutral at the switch, because the cable ran to the fixture first. If that is your box, the whole Kasa-versus-Leviton question is moot - the options are set out in smart switches without a neutral wire, and the usual answer is a Lutron Caseta dimmer.
03
What each one publishes
| Kasa KS225 | Leviton D26HD | Kasa KS230 kit | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neutral wire | Required | Required | Required, at both boxes |
| Hub | None | None | None |
| Matter | Yes | Yes | Not listed |
| 3-way | No - single pole only | Yes, wired or wireless | Yes - that is the kit |
| Dimming | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Radio | 2.4GHz Wi-Fi | Wi-Fi, 2nd gen | 2.4GHz Wi-Fi |
| Safety mark listed | UL certified | Not stated on the listing | ETL certified |
| Price | $24.99 | $54.99 | $41.99 |
Two rows in that table do most of the work. The Matter row and the 3-way row cross over: the Kasa has Matter but not 3-way, the Kasa kit has 3-way but not Matter, and the Leviton is the only one with both. If neither of those matters to you, the price row decides it and Kasa wins easily.
04
Where they actually differ
The 3-way circuit, which is the whole argument. A hallway, a staircase or a long kitchen is usually switched from two places. The Leviton handles that in one device - its listing states wired or wireless 3-way, so the second location can be a companion rather than a second smart switch. Kasa's answer is a different product: the KS230 kit, two switches in a box, because both ends of the circuit get replaced. Neither approach is wrong. They are different shapes, and buying the single-pole KS225 for a 3-way circuit is the most common way to get this wrong.
Matter, and where it goes missing. Matter is the cross-ecosystem standard the Connectivity Standards Alliance publishes, and its practical value is that a device is not stranded if one company's app is discontinued. Both single dimmers list it. The Kasa 3-way kit does not, listing Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings instead. So on a 3-way circuit the choice is not just two switches versus one - it is Matter versus no Matter, and that tilts a decision the price would otherwise settle.
Price, honestly. Kasa is cheaper in both configurations, and the 3-way kit is still cheaper than a single Leviton dimmer. The Leviton is not trying to be the budget choice; it is trying to be the one switch that covers more cases.
What they have in common, which is more than you would think. Both are Wi-Fi switches on your own network with no hub to buy. Both dim. Both work with the major voice assistants. Both put the control at the wall, which is the real argument for a smart switch over a smart bulb: a switch cannot be defeated by somebody turning the power off at the wall.
05
The picks
Kasa KS225 - the pick for a single-pole circuit. Matter dimming at the wall, UL certified, timer and schedule in the app, no hub, at roughly half the Leviton.
Who it is for: a light switched from one place, in a house with neutrals. Who should skip it: anyone with a 3-way circuit - this is the wrong shape and the KS230 is the right one.
Cons: requires a neutral wire; single pole only; 2.4GHz Wi-Fi per switch, so a large install loads the network; hardwired, so permission and generally an electrician.
Leviton Decora Smart D26HD - the pick for a 3-way circuit. Wired or wireless 3-way in one switch, with Matter, Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple Home all listed. It is the only product on this page that does 3-way and Matter together.
Who it is for: hallways and stairs, and anyone who wants one switch to cover more cases. Who should skip it: a plain single-pole circuit where the extra capability is money spent on nothing.
Cons: requires a neutral wire; about twice the price of the Kasa; rated consistently below Lutron for reliability in the same comparisons; hardwired.
Kasa KS230 KIT v2 - the cheaper 3-way route. Two switches in one box, no hub, ETL certified, and still less than a single Leviton.
Who it is for: a 3-way circuit where price matters more than Matter. Who should skip it: anyone building toward a Matter home, since this kit does not list it.
Cons: no Matter listed; needs a neutral at both boxes; two switches on Wi-Fi for one circuit; two installs instead of one.
Lutron Caseta dimmer - if the answer to the neutral question was no. It needs no neutral wire, which is why this site keeps coming back to it for older wiring. It runs on its own radio rather than your Wi-Fi.
Who it is for: any box without a neutral, and anyone who wants switches off the Wi-Fi entirely. Who should skip it: anyone who does not want to buy a bridge for app control.
Cons: app control needs the Lutron bridge, an extra purchase; the ecosystem is deliberately closed, with no native Matter; and it is the most expensive route here. The full comparison is in Lutron Caseta vs Kasa.
06
Before you buy either
Count the switch locations first, then the switches. Walk the circuit. If a light has two switches controlling it, you need the 3-way answer, and that single fact reorders this whole page. The mechanism is explained in three-way switches explained.
Check the neutral before you order anything. It is the one irreversible mistake here - a switch that cannot be fitted is a return, not a workaround.
Count the devices you are adding to Wi-Fi. Both brands put every switch on your 2.4GHz network. One or two is nothing. A house of twelve is a real load, and it is the single best argument for a system like Caseta that runs on its own radio instead.
Check what the bulbs will do. A smart dimmer is only as good as the bulbs under it - a non-dimmable LED on any dimmer will buzz or flicker regardless of which brand is on the wall. The compatibility question is in LED dimmer compatibility.

A hallway or stair circuit switched from two places
Kasa (TP-Link) KS230 KIT v2 Smart 3-Way Dimmer Switch Kit
#ad Price as of October 26, 2026. How we earn
Two switches in a box, because a 3-way circuit needs both ends replaced - the Kasa answer when the single-pole KS225 is the wrong shape for the wiring you have.
| Lumens | n/a - controls a circuit, does not light |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | n/a |
| CRI | n/a |
| Power source | Replaces both switches on a 3-way circuit. Requires a neutral wire. Electrical work. |
| Dimmable | Yes |
| Renter-safe method | NOT renter-safe. Replacing switches is an electrical alteration. |
What it gets right
- A complete 3-way kit rather than one switch and a guess
- No hub required, on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi
- ETL certified, and works with Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings
- Still cheaper than a single switch from the premium brands
What it costs you
- No Matter support listed, unlike the single-pole KS225
- Requires a neutral wire at both boxes
- Two switches on Wi-Fi for one circuit, so twice the network load
- Hardwired, so permission and generally an electrician
Spec source: Amazon listing - Kasa Smart 3-Way Dimmer Switch Kit KS230 KIT v2, neutral wire required, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, works with Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings, ETL certified, no hub required - retrieved September 3, 2026.

Owners replacing a wall dimmer in an older home
Lutron Caseta Smart Dimmer Switch (no neutral required)
#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn
Handles 150W of dimmable LED and, unusually, needs no neutral wire - which is the single thing that stops most smart dimmers going into an older house.
| Lumens | n/a - controls a circuit, does not light |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | n/a |
| CRI | n/a |
| Power source | Replaces a wall switch. Electrical work. |
| Dimmable | Yes - wall, app, or Pico remote |
| Renter-safe method | NOT renter-safe. Replacing a switch is an electrical alteration needing permission. |
What it gets right
- No neutral wire required, so it fits older homes where most smart dimmers will not
- 150W dimmable LED or 600W incandescent - far more than a domestic circuit needs
- The wall switch keeps working normally for anyone without the app
What it costs you
- Electrical work. In a rental this needs the landlord's agreement.
- Needs the Caseta bridge for app and voice control
- Stays with the property when you leave

FAQ
Questions people actually ask
+Is Kasa or Leviton better for smart switches?
Kasa if the light is switched from one place and you want the cheapest credible Matter dimmer. Leviton if the light is switched from two places, because its Decora Smart dimmer handles a 3-way circuit either wired or wirelessly in a single switch, while Kasa sells a separate two-switch kit for that job. On a plain single-pole circuit they do the same thing and Kasa costs roughly half.
+Do Kasa and Leviton smart switches need a neutral wire?
Both of the dimmers compared here do, and so does the Kasa 3-way kit. That is the first thing to check and it is not optional - a switch box without a neutral rules all three out. Leviton publishes the test: with the breaker off, two cable bundles in the box with the white wires tied together usually means you have one.
+Do either of them need a hub?
No. Both are Wi-Fi switches that join your home network directly and run from their own app, which is the main thing they have in common and the main thing that separates them from Lutron Caseta. The trade is that every switch is another device on your 2.4GHz network.
+Do Kasa and Leviton support Matter?
The two single dimmers do - the Kasa KS225 and the Leviton D26HD both list Matter. The Kasa KS230 3-way kit does not list it, which is a real consideration: if you want Matter on a 3-way circuit, the Leviton is the one that offers it.
+Which is cheaper, Kasa or Leviton?
Kasa, in both configurations. The single-pole KS225 is roughly half the price of the Leviton D26HD, and even the two-switch KS230 3-way kit comes in under one Leviton dimmer at the prices we checked. The Leviton is not asking to be the cheap option - it is asking to be the one switch that covers a 3-way.
+Can I use a Kasa switch on a 3-way circuit?
Not the KS225, which is single-pole only. Kasa sells the KS230 kit for that, which replaces both switches on the circuit. The alternative approach is the Leviton, which can do a 3-way wired or wirelessly - the wireless option means the second location does not always need its own smart switch.
