Dimmers, Switches & Controls - Comparison

Regular dimmer vs smart dimmer

By Sawyer V. · Last verified September 11, 2026

Both replace the switch on the wall, and both dim LEDs properly if you pick the right one. The question is whether you want the light reachable from anywhere but the wall.

Specifications are the manufacturer or retailer published figures, compiled by hand. We have not measured them, and where a figure is not published we write "Not published" rather than guess.

01

The decision, in one table

A regular LED dimmer against two smart dimmers.
Lutron Maestro LED+Lutron CasetaKasa KS220
TypeRegular dimmerSmart dimmerSmart dimmer
ControlAt the wallWall, app, voice, Pico remoteWall, app, voice
Neutral wireNot requiredNot requiredRequired
HubNoneLutron bridge for app and voiceNone - Matter certified
LED capacity150W150WNot stated here
SchedulesNoYesYes
Renter-safeNoNoNo

Both fix the dimming; only one adds control. A dimmer designed for LED loads, smart or not, is what stops flicker and buzzing. A smart dimmer adds schedules, voice and remote control on top. If you would never use those, you do not need to pay for them.

02

Where each one wins

Simplicity: the regular dimmer. The Lutron Maestro LED+ is designed for LED dimming, handles 150W of LED, needs no neutral wire and works single-pole or multi-location - with no app, no account and nothing to update.

Older homes that want smart: Caseta. The Lutron Caseta dimmer also needs no neutral and handles 150W of dimmable LED, and adds app, voice and Pico remote control through Lutron's bridge. The full verdict is in is Lutron Caseta worth it.

Neutral-wire homes on a budget: the KS220. The Kasa KS220 is Matter certified and needs no hub, but it requires a neutral wire - which older switch boxes often lack.

Lamps: neither. For a lamp, a Lutron Credenza on the cord dims up to 100W of dimmable LED with nothing installed - see plug-in dimmers.

03

Who each one is for

Choose a regular LED dimmer if you dim at the wall and nowhere else, and you want the most dependable, simplest control. It is also the right fix when the only problem is flicker from an old incandescent-era dimmer.

Choose a smart dimmer if you want lights on a schedule, dimmed by voice, or controlled from a remote in another room. Check your switch box for a neutral wire first - it decides which smart dimmers are possible.

Rent? Neither is yours to install. A plug-in dimmer or a smart plug does the job for lamps - compared in smart bulb vs smart plug.

A non-smart wall dimmer that actually handles LEDs

Lutron Maestro LED+ Dimmer Switch (MACL-153M)

#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn

150W of LED on a dimmer built for LED drivers rather than filaments, with no neutral needed - the honest fix when the flicker is the dimmer and you own the place.

Lumensn/a - controls a circuit, does not light
Color temperaturen/a
CRIn/a
Power sourceReplaces a wall switch. Electrical work.
DimmableYes - tap for on/off, slide for level
Renter-safe methodNOT renter-safe. Replacing a switch is an electrical alteration needing permission.

What it gets right

  • Designed for LED dimming rather than adapted from an incandescent design
  • Handles LED, incandescent or halogen on the same circuit
  • No neutral wire required; single-pole or multi-location

What it costs you

  • Electrical work, so not an option in most rentals
  • No app or voice control - this is a plain dimmer done properly
  • Still cannot dim a bulb that is not marked dimmable

Owners replacing a wall dimmer in an older home

Lutron Caseta Smart Dimmer Switch (no neutral required)

Check price on Amazon

#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn

Handles 150W of dimmable LED and, unusually, needs no neutral wire - which is the single thing that stops most smart dimmers going into an older house.

Lumensn/a - controls a circuit, does not light
Color temperaturen/a
CRIn/a
Power sourceReplaces a wall switch. Electrical work.
DimmableYes - wall, app, or Pico remote
Renter-safe methodNOT renter-safe. Replacing a switch is an electrical alteration needing permission.

What it gets right

  • No neutral wire required, so it fits older homes where most smart dimmers will not
  • 150W dimmable LED or 600W incandescent - far more than a domestic circuit needs
  • The wall switch keeps working normally for anyone without the app

What it costs you

  • Electrical work. In a rental this needs the landlord's agreement.
  • Needs the Caseta bridge for app and voice control
  • Stays with the property when you leave

Kasa (TP-Link) KS220 Smart Dimmer Switch

#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn

Matter-certified dimming at the wall for a fraction of the hub-based systems - the value pick, provided your switch boxes have a neutral wire.

Lumensn/a - controls a circuit, does not light
Color temperaturen/a
CRIn/a
Power sourceReplaces a wall switch. Requires a neutral wire. Electrical work.
DimmableYes
Renter-safe methodNOT renter-safe. Replacing a switch is an electrical alteration.

What it gets right

  • Matter certified, so it is not locked to one app's future
  • Dimming at the wall, which survives anybody flipping the switch
  • The cheapest credible smart dimmer in current roundups

What it costs you

  • Requires a neutral wire - older switch boxes frequently have none
  • Hardwired, so it needs permission if you rent and generally an electrician
  • Wi-Fi per switch, so a large install loads the network

Dimming a lamp with nothing installed in the wall

Lutron Credenza Plug-In Lamp Dimmer (TTCL-100H)

Check price on Amazon

#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn

A dimmer that sits on the cord between the lamp and the outlet, rated for 100W of dimmable LED - the only route to real dimming that touches no wiring at all.

Lumensn/a - controls a lamp, does not light
Color temperaturen/a
CRIn/a
Power sourcePlugs in between the lamp and the outlet (6 ft cord)
DimmableThat is the whole product - slide to dim, slide to off
Renter-safe methodPlugs in. No wiring, no switch change, nothing fixed.

What it gets right

  • Rated for 100W of dimmable CFL/LED or 250W incandescent - well beyond any single lamp
  • Lutron's dimming circuitry is designed for high-efficiency bulbs, which is where cheap dimmers fail
  • UL and CSA listed, and it comes with you when you move

What it costs you

  • The bulb still has to be marked dimmable - a plug-in dimmer cannot fix a non-dimmable bulb
  • Sits visibly on the cord, so it wants to be behind furniture
  • One lamp per dimmer

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

+Is a smart dimmer worth it over a regular dimmer?

If you want schedules, voice control or dimming from your phone, yes. If you only ever dim at the wall, a good LED dimmer such as the Lutron Maestro LED+ does that job and needs no app.

+Do smart dimmers need a neutral wire?

Some do. The Kasa KS220 requires one; the Lutron Caseta dimmer does not. The Maestro LED+ regular dimmer also needs no neutral.

+Do smart dimmers need a hub?

It depends on the system. The Caseta dimmer needs Lutron's bridge for app and voice control; the Kasa KS220 does not.

+Will a new dimmer stop LED flicker?

Often, if the old dimmer was designed for incandescent bulbs. Both Lutron dimmers here are rated for 150W of dimmable LED, but the bulbs still have to be marked dimmable.

+Can renters install either one?

No - both replace a wall switch, which is electrical work. The renter version is a plug-in dimmer on a lamp cord, such as the Lutron Credenza.
