The brightest LED bulbs you can actually fit

Most homes are wired around a 60-watt incandescent, which made about 800 lumens. LED broke that ceiling years ago, and the useful question now is not what a bulb can produce but what your fixture will accept. The ladder looks like this.

• 800 lm - the old 60W-equivalent, still the default in most packs.
• 1,500 - 1,600 lm - the 100W-equivalent A19. Same shape and size as an ordinary bulb, so it goes anywhere the old one did.
• 2,550 - 2,600 lm - the 150W-equivalent A21. A slightly larger envelope, which is where fixture size starts to matter.
• 4,000 lm - an A23. Genuinely large, and the top of what a screw-in household bulb does.
• Beyond that - shop lights and multi-panel garage fixtures. The 4 ft fixture at the bottom of this page publishes 6,500 lumens.

The shape codes tell you the size directly: the number is the diameter in eighths of an inch, so an A19 is 2.4 inches across, an A21 is 2.6, and an A23 is 2.9. Those look like small differences on paper and they are the difference between a bulb that fits a shade and one that does not - a comparable 33W A23 lamp publishes 6.57 inches of height and 3.23 inches of width.

Brightness is the easy part of this category and the least interesting. These are the criteria that separate a bulb worth buying from a number on a box, in order.

1. A published lumen figure. Not a wattage equivalence, which is a marketing conversion. Every pick here prints lumens.
2. Physical size against your fixture. The shape code is the specification: A19 fits where the old bulb fit, A21 usually does, A23 usually does not.
3. Color rendering at that output. This is where high-lumen bulbs compromise. The picks run CRI 95, 90 and 80 as output climbs, and the page says so rather than pretending the trade does not exist - best high-CRI LED bulbs covers why it matters.
4. Dimmability. A very bright bulb you cannot turn down is a bad buy for a living space. Three of the five here dim.
5. Rated life and warranty. The brightest bulbs here have the shortest published lives, which is worth knowing before you fit one somewhere awkward.
6. Color temperature choice. Most high-output bulbs are sold as daylight only. The two picks that offer 2700K are the reason this page is usable in a house rather than a workshop.

We did not test these in a lab. Every figure is the manufacturer's published specification, or the retailer listing where the maker publishes none, with the page it came from in the sources below.

Luxrite A21, 150W equivalent - the pick. 2,550 lumens at 2700K with CRI 90, a 220 degree beam, TRIAC dimming and 25,000 hours published. It is the brightest bulb on this page that still renders color like a living-room bulb should, and Luxrite publishes the whole specification rather than an equivalence and a promise.
Cons: an A21 is longer and wider than an A19, so it fouls small shades and tight fittings - measure first; the warranty is 2 years, shorter than several ordinary bulbs on this site; and no enclosed-fixture rating is published, which at this output is the specification you would most like to see.

Philips Ultra Definition, 100W equivalent - the bright bulb that fits anywhere. 1,500 lumens at 2700K with CRI 95 and dimming, in a standard A19 envelope. If the fixture is small, sealed, or simply somewhere you do not want to gamble on size, this is as far up the ladder as you can safely go - and it has the best color rendering here by a distance.
Cons: 1,500 lm is the lowest output on this page; in a bare or open fitting it is already enough to glare; and Philips publishes no rated life on the listing we can read.

Luxrite A23, 4,000 lumens - the most light from one socket. 4,000 lumens from 33 watts, dimmable, damp rated and sold in 2700K as well as the cool temperatures this class usually comes in. For a garage, a basement, a stairwell or a workshop ceiling with one socket, nothing else screws in and does this.
Cons: it is a big lamp - a comparable A23 publishes 6.57 inches tall and 3.23 across, so it will not fit most household fixtures; CRI 80; 15,000 hours, the shortest rated life here; and no manufacturer page could be opened, so every figure is the listing's.

Sylvania 79713 3-way A21 - bright only when you want it. 650, 1,600 and 2,600 lumens on three steps from an ordinary 3-way lamp socket. The argument for a 3-way here is that peak brightness is a setting rather than a permanent condition, which is exactly what a reading lamp in a living room wants.
Cons: it needs a 3-way socket and switch to do anything useful; CRI 80; it does not dim smoothly, it steps; and no rated life is published on the listing.

Hykolity 4 ft shop light - when the answer stops being a bulb. 6,500 lumens at 5000K from 60 watts, with cords, chain and mounting hardware in the box. More light than any bulb here, spread along four feet instead of concentrated at one point, which is the honest answer for a garage or a workshop.
Cons: it is a fixture, so it has to be hung and plugged in; no CRI published; 5000K only; not dimmable. The full set is in garage and shop lights.

A dim living room with ordinary fittings. The Philips 100W-equivalent in every socket first - it fits where the old bulbs fitted and nearly doubles the output. Only move up a size if that is still short.

A ceiling fixture with one socket in a big room. The Luxrite A21, if the fitting has room for it. CRI 90 at 2,550 lumens is the best combination of brightness and color on this page.

A garage, basement, stairwell or utility room. The A23 at 4,000 lumens if there is one socket and space for the lamp, or the shop light if you can hang one. Cold spaces have their own considerations, in lighting for cold and unheated spaces.

A reading lamp beside a chair. The 3-way: full output for the page, the bottom step for the evening. More on that in best 3-way LED bulbs.

A high ceiling. Brightness is only half the problem there - distance is the other half, and the arithmetic is in lighting for high ceilings.

Check the fixture will physically take it. An A21 adds about a quarter inch of diameter and some length over an A19; an A23 adds far more. Harps, shades and glass globes are what the bulb hits.

Check whether the fitting is sealed. The wattage rating is rarely the obstacle with LED; trapped heat is. In an enclosed fitting, buy a bulb listed for it - enclosed-fixture bulbs explains what happens when you do not.

Put the brightness where the work is. A 2,550 lumen bulb in a ceiling fitting lights the floor; the same output in a lamp beside the chair lights the book. The layering argument is in layered lighting.

Buy dimming if the room is used at night. Bright is a daytime setting in most homes. A bulb that cannot come down will end up switched off instead.

Keep one color temperature per room. High-output bulbs are usually sold in daylight white, and one 5000K bulb in a room of 2700K ones makes the whole room look wrong - the comparison is in 4000K vs 5000K.
