The best lighting for high ceilings

Distance eats light. The same bulb lights a smaller area more brightly as it gets closer, and a larger area more dimly as it gets further away. Roughly, doubling the distance quarters the light on the surface underneath. That is why a fitting that lit your last apartment looks feeble in a room with a 12 or 14 foot ceiling.

Access is expensive. Every bulb change means a ladder on a floor that may be stairs, tile or the top of a stairwell. That turns rated life from a footnote into a buying criterion, and it makes enclosed-fixture ratings matter: a bulb that runs hot in a sealed fitting fails early, and early is the problem here.

Everything on this page is chosen against those two facts: as much published output as the shape allows, and the longest rated life available at that output.

1. Published lumens, at the top of the range. 1,500 lm is the practical ceiling for an ordinary A19, and both bulbs here that reach it publish the figure.
2. Rated life, because of the ladder. Prefer 15,000 to 25,000 hours and a real warranty. The arithmetic of what those numbers mean is in how long LED bulbs last.
3. An enclosed-fixture rating if the fitting is sealed. Most high flush mounts are sealed domes, which trap heat. A bulb not listed for that runs hot and fails early - see enclosed-fixture bulbs.
4. A way to bring light down. A pendant on a long cord, a torchiere bouncing off the ceiling, or floor lamps. Fighting a 14 ft ceiling from the ceiling alone is the expensive way.
5. Dimming, if the room is for evenings. Tall rooms often need a lot of light during the day and very little at night. One of the picks here is not dimmable, and it says so.

Philips Ultra Definition 100W A19 - the pick. 1,500 lumens at 2700K with CRI 95 and dimming. It is the rare bulb that is both at the top of the output range and at the top of the color-rendering range, which matters because a tall room is usually a living room with a lot of surfaces in it.
Cons: 1,500 lm in a bare or open fitting is glare you will see from the sofa; check the fitting's own wattage rating before fitting several.

Feit adjustable white 100W-equivalent A19 - the same output, five colors. 1,500 lumens with 2700K to 5000K selectable on the bulb, and listed for enclosed fixtures and damp locations. In a stairwell or a landing where you want cooler light than the living room, being able to set it once is worth a lot.
Cons: not dimmable, so it goes on a plain switch; CRI 80, a real step down from the Philips; the setting is made before it goes in, which at this height is a one-shot decision.

Feit 100W-equivalent enclosed-rated A19 - for a sealed dome. About 1,500 lumens at 2700K with CRI 90+, dimmable, and listed for enclosed fixtures. Most flush mounts at height are sealed, and this is the combination those fittings want.
Cons: output is given as a 100W equivalence rather than a precise figure in the listing; and like every A19, it is omnidirectional, so a deep fitting swallows some of it.

Sunco 14 in. round LED ceiling light - when the fixture is the fix. 1,500 lumens from the fitting itself with five color temperatures set by a slider, so there is no bulb to change at all. In a high hallway or landing, an integrated fitting with a 50,000-hour class life is the maintenance answer.
Cons: integrated, so when it eventually fails the whole fitting comes down; CRI 80+ published as a floor; dimmer compatibility is not specified.

Brightech Sky torchiere - the cheat. 2,190 lumens aimed at the ceiling from a floor lamp. In a tall room this is the most light per dollar you can add without a ladder, an electrician or a hole, and it lights the upper half of the room that downlights leave dark.
Cons: it needs an outlet and a corner; the light is indirect, so it is soft rather than task-grade; no CRI published.

Change them all at once. When one bulb in a high fitting dies, replace every bulb in it. Trips up are the expensive part, not bulbs.

Buy the rated life, not the wattage saving. The difference between a 10,000-hour bulb and a 25,000-hour bulb is one ladder trip against three.

Own a bulb changer pole. The suction-cup and claw heads reach most enclosed and open fittings from the floor, and cost less than one call-out.

Put the smart control at the switch, not in the bulb. A smart bulb at 14 ft that needs a firmware reset is a ladder trip. A smart switch stays at hand height.
