The best torchiere floor lamps

Of every lamp shape sold, exactly one substitutes for a missing ceiling fixture. A torchiere points its output at the ceiling; the ceiling scatters it back down across the whole room. You lose some light to absorption on the way, and you gain an emitter the size of the room.

Everything else - shaded floor lamps, arcs, tripods - lights a zone. Those are useful and this site recommends them elsewhere, but they do not lift a room, and buying one expecting it to is the most common disappointment in this category.

Check the ceiling before you buy. White or near-white plaster returns most of what hits it. A dark paint, exposed timber, or a heavily beamed ceiling absorbs a large share, and the lamp that was going to fix your room quietly loses much of its output into the structure.

Placement is the other free variable: put it in the corner diagonally opposite where you sit, so the light crosses the maximum ceiling area before it comes down and the lamp itself is never in your eye line.

And the honest cheaper option: if your room is short by 700 lumens rather than 2,000, do not buy a torchiere at all. Put 1,500-lumen bulbs in the lamps you already own and re-check the arithmetic.
