The best smart floodlight bulbs

A ceiling of recessed cans is the standard specification in modern homes, and it comes with a standard complaint: they are on a plain switch, they are either fully on or fully off, and the room has one setting.

The conventional fix is a wall dimmer, which is electrical work - permission if you rent, an electrician for most people either way. Smart reflector bulbs are the other route, and they are the only one that requires touching nothing.

Screw them in and the cans become dimmable, schedulable, and usually tunable from warm to cool, with the existing switch left exactly as it was. For a rented home with six cans in the living room, that is the whole answer.

The shape matters as much as the smart part. A BR30 is a reflector - it has a mirrored interior that pushes light downward instead of scattering it in every direction, which is what a can needs. An ordinary A19 in a recessed can aims half its output at the inside of the fitting.

LIFX SuperColor BR30 - the pick. 1,100 published lumens, no hub required, and it works with Alexa, Google, Apple Home and Matter. It is both the brightest here and the one least likely to be stranded by an app going away - and in a can, brightness matters more than in a lamp, because the light has further to travel and a reflector throws it at the floor.
Cons: CRI is not published on the BR30, which is a real gap for a bulb lighting a whole room; it is expensive once you have six cans; and it loses control when the wall switch goes off.

Wyze Bulb Color BR30 - for filling a ceiling. 950 lumens at a 75W equivalence with full color, at a price that makes doing six cans realistic rather than a project. When the alternative is leaving four of six cans ordinary because the premium bulbs cost too much, this is the better outcome.
Cons: no CRI published; Wi-Fi per bulb, so a whole ceiling is a real load on the router; and it is tied to the Wyze app rather than an open standard.

Feit BR30 smart - for one or two. 650 lumens at a 65W equivalence over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi with no hub, widely stocked so it is easy to match later. Honest about its output rather than inflating an equivalence.
Cons: the dimmest of the three - check it against your ceiling height before committing; 2.4GHz only; no CRI published.

Waveform 95 CRI BR30 - the non-smart benchmark. Included deliberately. 800 lumens at CRI 95+ with R9 80+ and no smart features at all. If what you want from your cans is light that makes the room look right rather than an app, this beats every bulb above on the only measure they refuse to publish.
Cons: no dimming without a wall dimmer, which is the electrical work you were avoiding.

Check the can diameter first. A BR30 is 3.75 inches and fits 4, 5 and 6 inch cans. It will not seat in a small 3 inch can, which needs an R20. And a 6 inch can will also take the larger BR40, though no smart BR40 appears here. The sizing is in bulb shapes and bases.

Check whether the can is sealed. Airtight and insulation-contact housings trap heat around the bulb's driver, and smart bulbs have more electronics in the base than ordinary ones. The trade is color rendering. Not one smart bulb on this page publishes a CRI figure, while non-smart reflectors publish 95+. That is the honest cost of the category, and whether it matters depends on the room: a living room where you want scenes can live with it; a kitchen where you judge food probably should not.
