The best smart bulbs for Alexa

"Works with Alexa" is on the box of essentially every smart bulb sold. It is a checkbox that nearly the whole category clears, which makes it close to useless as a way of choosing between them.

So this page treats Alexa support as a filter rather than a ranking, and then ranks the bulbs that pass on the things that actually differ - which are the same things any bulb is judged on here.

• Published lumens. A smart bulb is still a bulb, and a dim one is dim whatever you say to it.
• Published CRI. Most smart bulbs do not publish it, and the ones that do are telling you something.
• Whether it is locked to one app. The bulb outlives the software fashion; a Matter bulb is not stranded if a company loses interest.

LIFX A19 - the pick. 1,100 published lumens with 90+ CRI and no hub required. It is the only bulb in this group that publishes both figures, and both are good - 1,100 lumens is brighter than the 800 lm household default, and 90+ CRI is the difference between a room that looks right and one that looks slightly off. Cons: the most expensive per bulb here by a clear margin, and like every smart bulb it loses control the moment somebody flips the wall switch.

Sengled Matter A19 - the one least likely to be stranded. Matter certified, so it speaks a standard rather than one company's protocol. That means it works with Alexa today and keeps working if you move to Google or Apple Home tomorrow, and it is not dependent on Sengled maintaining an app forever. Cons: neither lumens nor CRI is published, which for a bulb is a real gap - you are buying the protocol rather than a known light.

WiZ color A19 - the value option. Tunable white plus color, no hub, and consistently the cheapest credible way to put several controllable bulbs in a room. For a bedside lamp or a child's room, where the useful feature is a very dim warm setting rather than color accuracy, this is enough.
Cons: no published lumens or CRI, and it is tied to the WiZ app rather than an open standard.

Govee color bulb - for color effects. No hub, tunable white plus color, and a mature app for effects and scenes if that is what you want the bulbs for.
Cons: nothing published on output or color rendering, and locked to the Govee ecosystem.

The wall switch. Every bulb on this page needs continuous power to hear Alexa. Somebody flips the switch, the bulb goes dark and unreachable, and everyone concludes the smart lighting is broken. It is not broken - it is the architecture.

There are two real fixes and neither is telling the household not to touch switches. Put a wireless remote over the switch so the obvious thing to press is the right thing, or move the intelligence to a smart plug or a smart switch instead of the bulb.
