How to light a kitchen with no ceiling light

In a living room, a missing ceiling light is an atmosphere problem. In a kitchen it is a knife-and-hot-pan problem, and the fix has a clear order: light the work surface first, then the room, then the sink.

That order matters because the instinct - buy the brightest lamp available and put it in the corner - lights the ceiling and leaves the counter in the shadow of your own body and your own wall cabinets. A 400 lumen bar under a cabinet does more for a kitchen than a 1,600 lumen lamp across the room.

The good news is that every layer here plugs in. A kitchen without a ceiling fixture is one of the few rooms where the renter-friendly answer is also the answer a professional would specify.

Under-cabinet bars are the whole game here. They sit at the front underside of the wall cabinets, throwing light forward onto the worktop rather than down onto your hands, and because they plug in they need no electrician.

Counter light alone makes a kitchen feel like a workshop at night. The room needs something overhead, and with no junction box the options are a plug-in ceiling fixture, plug-in track, or lamps.

Give the sink its own light. It is the one spot where you reliably work in your own shadow, and it is usually the furthest from everything else. The fix is small and specific: lighting over a kitchen sink.

Do not mix color temperatures across the room. A 4000K counter next to a 2700K lamp reads as a fault. Keep the ambient light at 3000K and, if you want crisper light on the worktop, keep the step small.

Keep cords off the worktop. Route them up the back of the cabinet and along the shadow line, not across the surface where water and knives live.
