Five checks, in order
Lamps are sold on looks, and looks matter - it will sit in your room for years. But the lamps people regret are almost always the ones bought for looks alone: the elegant floor lamp that barely lights its own corner, the reading lamp that cannot be aimed. These five checks take a minute and prevent most of that.

The checks, in practice
1. Decide the job first. A lamp meant to light a room with no ceiling fixture is a different object from a reading lamp. The Brightech Sky torchiere is built for room light: 2,190 published lumens aimed at the ceiling. The OttLite ClearSun is built for a task: CRI 95+ with an adjustable height.
2. Find the output. Integrated-LED lamps should publish lumens; many do not, which is itself useful information. A lamp that takes a bulb gives whatever you put in it.
3. Socket or integrated. The Brightech Eden tripod takes a standard E26 bulb, so its light quality is your choice - fit a Philips Ultra Definition A19 at 800 lumens and CRI 95 and it outperforms many integrated lamps on color. The trade-off is in integrated LED vs bulb fixtures.

The mistakes these checks prevent
A decorative lamp bought as a room light. A small shaded lamp cannot light a room however nice it looks. Check the job and the output first.
An integrated lamp with no published output. If the maker will not say how bright it is, you cannot plan with it. Prefer one that publishes lumens.
A great lamp with the wrong bulb. A socket lamp is only as good as its bulb - the bulb checks are in how to buy a light bulb.

+How bright should a lamp be?
It depends on the job. A lamp lighting a whole room needs to be a significant share of the room's target - the Brightech Sky torchiere publishes 2,190 lumens. A reading or accent lamp needs far less, placed close.
+Is an integrated LED lamp better than one with a bulb?
