The best pendant lights for a kitchen island

Island pendants are bought from photographs and installed by guesswork, and the result is usually one of three specific failures: too few for the island, spaced so they look accidental, or hung at a height that puts a bulb in everyone's eyeline.

All three are arithmetic, and all three can be settled with a tape measure before you look at a single product.

The detail people miss is the end inset. The outermost pendants should sit roughly 6 to 12 inches in from each end of the island, not aligned with the edges - aligned with the edges they read as bookends rather than as a set, and the light falls off the end of the work surface.

Height is the one with a functional consequence rather than only an aesthetic one. At 30 to 36 inches above the countertop, the sight line across the island stays clear and the light is close enough to the surface to be useful. Higher and it stops defining the island; lower and somebody will hit their head on it.

A pendant over an island is unusual among ceiling fixtures: it hangs down into the room, at roughly the eye level of anyone sitting at the island. That makes glare a real design constraint rather than a theoretical one, and it makes the bulb choice matter more than in a flush mount.

A 2200K filament bulb - for exposed-bulb pendants. Where the pendant is a bare socket or an open cage and the bulb is the decoration. 700 lumens at 2200K with CRI 80+.
Cons: 2200K is decoration first - too warm and too dim to prepare food under, so treat it as the accent layer and light the counters properly elsewhere. The trade-offs are in vintage Edison LED bulbs.

The most common complaint about island pendants is that the kitchen is still badly lit after installing them. That is not a fault in the pendants - it is a misunderstanding of what they do.

Pendants light the island and define it as a zone. They are simultaneously the task light for that surface and the decorative feature of the room, which is why they get so much attention. What they cannot do is light the perimeter counters, because those are three to six feet away, against the walls, under the wall cabinets.

The perimeter is what under-cabinet lighting is for, and the two layers together are what makes a kitchen work. A kitchen with beautiful pendants and no under-cabinet light has one lit surface and a lot of shadowed counter - and the shadow falls exactly where you stand, because your own body blocks the ceiling light behind you.
