Specifications are the manufacturer or retailer published figures, compiled by hand. We have not measured them, and where a figure is not published we write "Not published" rather than guess.
01
The difference, in one table
| Chandelier | Pendant | |
|---|---|---|
| Light pattern | Many small sources, spread wide | One source, aimed down |
| Typical bulb | E12 candelabra, around 500 lm each | E26 A19 or reflector, 800 lm and up |
| Best over | Round or square tables, entries | Islands, long tables in a row, single spots |
| Glare | Exposed bulbs can glare - bulb choice matters | The shade controls glare |
| Dimming | Almost always wanted | Almost always wanted |
| Sizing | To the table or room | To the island length, in multiples |
A chandelier decorates the room; a pendant lights a surface. That is the short version. A chandelier's many small bulbs spread soft light in every direction. A pendant sends one source down onto whatever is below it.
02
Where each one wins
Dining rooms and entries: the chandelier. Over a round table or in a tall entry, spread light from many sources is the point. The bulb decides how it looks: a Satco 90 CRI candelabra gives 500 lumens at 2700K with color that flatters food, and a Luxrite E12 candelabra is rated for enclosed and wet locations. Sizing is in best chandelier for a dining room.
Islands and long tables: pendants. A long surface is lit evenly by two or three pendants in a row. A Philips Ultra Definition A19 gives 800 lumens at CRI 95 in each, and a reflector bulb such as the Waveform 95 CRI BR30 pushes more of it downward. Spacing is in best pendant lights for a kitchen island.
Low ceilings: often neither. Both hang down, and on a low ceiling that can put them in the way. The alternatives are in best lighting for low ceilings.
03
Choosing for your space
Round or square table: chandelier. One central fixture suits a table you sit around.
Long table or island: pendants. A row of pendants follows the shape of the surface.
No wiring allowed: both exist as plug-ins. A plug-in chandelier or pendant hangs from a hook and plugs into the wall - see plug-in chandeliers.
Either way, dim it. Dinner light is rarely full brightness. Dimmable bulbs and an LED-rated dimmer matter more than the fixture - see LED dimmer compatibility.

01
A chandelier over a dining table, where color matters
Satco 5.5W Vintage Edison B11 Candelabra LED, 90 CRI
#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn
500 lumens at 2700K with a published 90 CRI - the candelabra bulb to use where the light lands on food and faces rather than on a hallway wall.
| Lumens | 500 lm |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | 2700K |
| CRI | 90 |
| Power source | Screws into an E12 candelabra socket (5.5W) |
| Dimmable | Yes |
| Renter-safe method | A bulb swap. Fully reversible. |
What it gets right
- 90 CRI published, which is unusual for a candelabra bulb
- 2700K suits the living and dining rooms where chandeliers live
- Vintage B11 shape works in fittings that show the bulb
What it costs you
- Enclosed-fixture suitability is not stated
- Slightly higher wattage than rivals for the same 500 lm
- Decorative shape is wrong for a fitting with small shades

02
Chandeliers, including enclosed and outdoor fittings
Luxrite E12 Candelabra LED Bulb, 4.5W, 2700K
#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn
500 lumens at 2700K, dimmable, rated 15,000 hours - and rated for enclosed fixtures AND wet locations, which almost nothing in this format is.
| Lumens | 500 lm |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | 2700K |
| CRI | Not published |
| Power source | Screws into an E12 candelabra socket (4.5W) |
| Dimmable | Yes |
| Renter-safe method | A bulb swap. Fully reversible. |
What it gets right
- Rated for enclosed fixtures and wet locations - rare in a candelabra bulb
- 500 lm is real output for a format that is usually dim
- Dimmable, UL listed, 15,000 hour rated life
What it costs you
- CRI is not published
- HX10.5 glass shape suits some chandeliers and not others
- Sold in large packs, which is fine for a chandelier and wasteful for one sconce

03
The default bulb for almost every lamp in a home
Philips Ultra Definition A19 LED, 60W equivalent, 2700K
#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn
800 lumens at 2700K with a published CRI 95 for the price of an ordinary bulb - the single easiest upgrade in this entire category.
| Lumens | 800 lm |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | 2700K |
| CRI | 95 |
| Power source | Screws into a standard E26 socket (8W) |
| Dimmable | Yes |
| Renter-safe method | It is a bulb. Swap it, keep the old one, put it back when you leave. |
What it gets right
- CRI 95 at a mainstream price, which almost nothing else manages
- 2700K matches the warm light most rooms were designed around
- Dimmable and rated flicker-free
What it costs you
- 800 lumens is one bulb's worth - a dark room needs several
- 2700K is too warm for detailed kitchen task work
- R9 is not published, so deep reds are an unknown
Spec source: Home Depot listing - retrieved September 3, 2026.
04
Recessed cans where color accuracy is the whole point
Waveform Lighting Ultra High 95 CRI BR30 LED Bulb
#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn
800 lumens from 10.5W at CRI 95+ with R9 above 80 - and Waveform publishes the R9 figure, which is the number almost every other brand quietly omits.
| Lumens | 800 lm |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | 2700K or 3000K |
| CRI | 95+ (R9 80+) |
| Power source | Screws into a standard E26 socket (10.5W) |
| Dimmable | Yes |
| Renter-safe method | A bulb swap in an existing can. Fully reversible. |
What it gets right
- R9 above 80 is published, so deep reds are actually accounted for
- Two warm color temperatures rather than one compromise
- BR30 shape drops straight into standard recessed cans
What it costs you
- Several times the price of a supermarket BR30
- Sold direct rather than through every retailer
- 800 lumens is standard output, not high output

FAQ
Questions people actually ask
+Is a chandelier or a pendant better over a dining table?
Either can work. A chandelier spreads soft light across a round or square table; a row of pendants suits a long rectangular table better, because each one lights its own section.
+Should I use pendants or a chandelier over a kitchen island?
Pendants, usually. An island is long and narrow, and two or three pendants in a row light it evenly. Sizing and spacing are in best pendant lights for a kitchen island.
+What bulbs go in a chandelier?
Usually small candelabra (E12) bulbs. The Satco and Luxrite candelabra bulbs here both publish 500 lumens at 2700K; the Satco adds CRI 90, and the Luxrite is rated for enclosed and wet locations.
+How bright should a chandelier be?
Add up the bulbs. Six 500 lumen candelabra bulbs give 3,000 lumens - plenty for a dining room when it is on a dimmer.
+Should a chandelier or pendant be dimmable?
Almost always. Both usually hang where you eat or gather, and full brightness is rarely what you want at dinner. Use dimmable bulbs and a dimmer that suits LEDs.
