The best kitchen ceiling lights

By Sawyer V. · Last verified September 11, 2026

A kitchen ceiling light is the room's general light, not its task light. It has to be bright and even - and ideally dimmable, which is where most options fall short.

Specifications are the manufacturer or retailer published figures, compiled by hand. We have not measured them, and where a figure is not published we write "Not published" rather than guess.

01

General light, not task light

A kitchen ceiling light has one job: to light the room evenly so you can see into cupboards, across the floor and around the space. What it cannot do well is light the counter, because it sits behind you when you work there and your shadow falls on the job. That is what under-cabinet lighting is for.

So judge a kitchen ceiling fixture on even spread, enough output for the room, a color that suits it, and - if the kitchen opens onto a living area - dimming. The counter layer is covered in is under-cabinet lighting worth it.

The picks

Lithonia FMLWL 48 in. wraparound - the pick for most kitchens. A 4 ft integrated-LED wraparound at 4000K and CRI 85, listed for damp locations, with retailers publishing 2,380 to 2,900 lumens. Its long shape spreads light down a galley or across a rectangular kitchen evenly.
Cons: not dimmable; one color temperature; retailers disagree on the lumen figure.

Hykolity 4 ft wraparound - the most output, with a warm setting. Selectable 5,500, 6,500 or 7,500 lumens and 3000K, 4000K or 5000K, mounting on a wall or ceiling. It is the one to use in a large kitchen, or one that doubles as a workshop.
Cons: CRI, dimming and damp rating not published; even the lowest setting is a lot of light for a small kitchen.

Lithonia FMLRL 14 in. round - for a small kitchen that should dim. 1,600 lumens at 4000K, damp rated, and dimmable on most standard incandescent dimmers - the tidy choice for a small kitchen that opens onto a living room.
Cons: the lowest output here; fixed 4000K; CRI not published.

Enbrighten 18 in. under-cabinet bar - for the counter the ceiling cannot reach. 1,245 lumens at CRI 92 with five color settings, plugged in under the cabinet. Pair any ceiling light above with counter light like this.
Cons: 18 inches covers one work zone.

03

Choosing well

Match the shape to the room. A linear wraparound suits a galley or a long rectangle; a round flush mount suits a small, square kitchen.

Choose 3000K to 4000K. Feit Electric's guidance puts kitchens in that range. If the kitchen opens onto a warm-lit living room, lean to 3000K - the comparison is in 3000K vs 4000K.

Dimming is worth having in open plan. A non-dimming 4000K fixture can dominate a living area in the evening. The FMLRL dims; the wraparounds either do not or do not say.

Add light over the island or counter. The ceiling fixture lights the room; pendants and under-cabinet lights light the work - see best pendant lights for a kitchen island.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

+What is the best type of ceiling light for a kitchen?

One that spreads light evenly across the room: a linear wraparound down a galley kitchen, or a flush mount in a smaller square one. Counter work is better lit from under the cabinets.

+How many lumens does a kitchen ceiling light need?

For general light, this site's method uses 10 to 20 lumens per square foot, so a 10 x 12 ft kitchen wants roughly 1,200 to 2,400 lumens from the ceiling - with task light added under the cabinets.

+What color temperature is best for a kitchen?

3000K to 4000K, per Feit Electric's guidance. The Hykolity can be set to 3000K; the two Lithonia fixtures are fixed at 4000K.

+Should a kitchen ceiling light be dimmable?

It helps if the kitchen opens onto living space. The Lithonia FMLRL dims on most standard incandescent dimmers; the FMLWL wraparound does not dim.

+Can renters change a kitchen ceiling light?

Not without permission. The renter fixes - a brighter bulb and plug-in under-cabinet bars - are covered in renter-friendly kitchen lighting.
