Dimming LED strips and light bars

Everything on this site about dimming - the load minimums, the leading and trailing edge distinction, the compatibility lists - assumes a bulb. Bulbs are self-contained: the driver electronics live in the base, and a dimmer works by varying what reaches them.

A strip or a light bar splits that apart. The emitters are on the strip, and the driver lives in a separate power supply - the brick on the cord, or a unit inside the bar's housing. That distinction changes where dimming has to happen.

Put a mains dimmer in front of a strip's power supply and you are chopping the input to a device designed for a clean one. The driver tries to regulate around the gaps, which produces exactly the symptoms people report: flicker at low levels, an audible buzz, a dead zone where the strip cuts out, or a strip that simply refuses to go below half.

None of that is a fault in the strip. It is the wrong dimming method applied at the wrong point in the chain.

For a renter or anyone avoiding wiring, the practical conclusion is short: choose a product that dims on its own, and the entire problem disappears.

The Enbrighten 18 in. bar publishes 1,245 lumens at CRI 92 with five color temperature settings from 2700K to 6500K, and it dims natively - the control is part of the product, so there is no compatibility question to research and nothing extra to buy. That is why it is this site's default recommendation for under-cabinet work.

The GE 36 in. convertible bar takes a simpler approach with a high, low and off selection at 3000K and CRI 90. Stepped rather than stepless, but it is switchable at the fixture with no extra hardware and it links from a single plug.

The WOBANE COB strip at CRI 90+ runs from its own adapter, and its continuous emitting surface means that where it does dim there are no visible dots at low levels - a real advantage over discrete-LED strips, which show their individual emitters more obviously as they dim. If the product does not dim itself, there are two honest routes and one that is not.

A low-voltage controller between the driver and the strip. This is the correct place to intervene, because it operates on the constant-voltage output the strip actually runs on rather than on the mains input. It is how purpose-built strip systems are designed, and it is usually the manufacturer's own accessory.

A dimmable driver plus a dimmer rated for it. The proper hardwired solution, and it is electrical work on the building - which puts it in the permission tier for a renter, per can you change a light fixture in an apartment. The dimmer must be one the driver manufacturer lists, for the same compatibility reasons set out in LED dimmer compatibility.

A plug-in dimmer in front of the adapter - only if the manufacturer says so. A Lutron Credenza is designed for a dimmable bulb load, and a strip driver is a different animal. Some combinations work fine; plenty buzz. This is the one case on this page where the honest answer is to read the strip's own documentation rather than to generalize, and to treat silence as a no.
