Dim to warm vs standard dimming

An incandescent bulb made light by heating a wire. Turn the power down and the wire ran cooler, so the light went amber as it went dim. Every low evening light anyone grew up with worked that way, and it is why a dimmed LED can feel subtly wrong even when the level is right.

An LED does not work like that. Its color comes from the emitter and the phosphor over it, and neither changes when the driver reduces the current. A 2700K LED at 5% is still 2700K - just quieter. That is not a fault; it is simply a different behavior that a few bulbs deliberately undo.

Dim-to-warm bulbs - Philips calls its version Warm Glow - are built to reproduce the old curve. The Philips BR30 on this page is specified as dimming from 2700K toward about 2200K, which lands close to candlelight at the bottom of the range.

1. You already dim that room. Dim to warm only exists while the light is dimmed. On a plain switch you have bought a 2700K bulb at a premium.
2. The room is for evenings. Dining rooms and living rooms, where the light is part of the mood. Kitchens and bathrooms run at full and gain nothing.
3. The dimmer is LED-compatible. An old dimmer sized for filament bulbs may not run a 7 watt LED smoothly at the bottom of its range, which is exactly where you want this effect. See dimmer compatibility.
4. You can live with the CRI. The dim-to-warm bulb here publishes CRI 80 on the Philips distributor sheet, where an ordinary high-CRI bulb reaches 90 or 95. You are trading color accuracy for color behavior.

Philips BR30 with Warm Glow - the dim-to-warm pick. 650 lumens that dim from 2700K toward about 2200K, rated for enclosed fixtures and ENERGY STAR listed. In a ceiling of cans over a dining table or a sitting room, this is the bulb that makes the dimmer feel like it used to.
Cons: CRI 80 on the Philips distributor sheet - the Amazon listing says 83, and the page prints both; 650 lm is below an ordinary BR30, so a dim room stays dim; and the effect only appears once you dim it.

Sunco BR30 - the standard dimmable comparison. 850 lumens at a fixed 2700K, dimmable from 10% to 100%, 25,000 hours and a 5-year warranty. More light, longer life, and the color never moves.
Cons: no color shift at all, which is the entire point of the page; CRI published as a floor of 80+.

Feit selectable A19 - warm without a dimmer. 800 lumens at CRI 90 with five settings from 2700K to 5000K, chosen on the bulb. If what you actually wanted was warmer light rather than warmer dimming, this is cheaper and needs no dimmer at all.
Cons: one fixed value until you take the bulb out and change it; no shift as it dims.

Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance A19 - if you want both axes. 1,100 lumens with tunable white and dimming to 0.2%, so brightness and color are separate controls: warm at full, cool when you need it, dim without either.
Cons: the most expensive route by a distance; needs the app or a control, and a Bridge for the full system; CRI above 80 is ordinary.

Half the people who go looking for dim-to-warm bulbs are actually fixing a dimmer that misbehaves: flicker at the bottom, a buzz, or a range that stops at 30%.
