The verdict
If you want dimming on a lamp or fixture with no dimmer, the Westek 6009B socket dimmer is the pick. If you want power where there is only a light, the DiCUNO UL Listed socket-to-outlet adapter is the one to buy, because it is UL Listed and most of this category is not. Both screw in, neither needs a tool, and both come out with you.
The whole category exists for one reason: a bulb socket is a powered connector sitting in a ceiling, a closet and a garage in nearly every home, and a tenant is allowed to unscrew a bulb. Everything here uses that.
| Adapter | Turns the socket into | Keeps the bulb? | UL Listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Socket dimmer | A dimmable light | Yes | Not stated on this listing |
| Socket-to-outlet | Two polarized outlets | No | Yes |
| Socket splitter | Two bulb sockets | Yes, two of them | Not stated on this listing |
| Motion socket | A motion and dusk-to-dawn light | Yes | Not stated on this listing |

How these were judged
This is a category of inexpensive parts from makers who publish very little, so the criteria are mostly about separating what is specified from what is assumed.
- A safety listing, where one exists. These carry mains current in a fitting that is often left on. UL Listed is stated on two of the four below and missing on the rest, and we say which is which rather than evening it out.
- Whether the light survives. An adapter that takes the socket and gives nothing back has a much narrower use than one that passes the bulb through.
- Honest about height. Every adapter adds length between socket and bulb. That is the reason most of them fail to fit, and none of the listings mention it.
- Published function, not implied function. A motion socket with no published detection range is sold on an assumption.
We did not bench-test these. Every figure here is the retailer listing's own, with the page it came from in the sources below, and where a maker publishes nothing we say so.

The picks
Westek 6009B socket dimmer - the pick. A full-range rotary dimmer that screws between socket and bulb, rated 100W on the listing. It is the answer to a lamp with a plain on/off switch and no outlet-level control, and to a rented fixture you are not allowed to rewire.
Who it is for: a renter with a hardwired fixture or a lamp whose socket switch is all it has. Who should skip it: anyone whose bulb is not dimmable - this will buzz and shorten its life - anyone with an enclosed fitting that will not take the extra height, and anyone who would rather reach a control than fish under a shade for one.
Cons: the 100W rating is an incandescent-era figure; the control sits under the shade where it is awkward to reach; it raises the bulb, which can stop a harp or shade sitting as before; and stock on this listing has been thin.
DiCUNO E26 to 2 polarized outlet adapter - for power where there is none. UL Listed, two polarized outlets, two per pack. The standard fix for a garage, a basement or a closet that has a light fitting and no receptacle anywhere useful.
Who it is for: anyone who needs to plug something in near a ceiling or closet light - a strip light, a charger, a fan. Who should skip it: anyone powering something that needs a ground, because these are two-prong with no earth, and anyone who still wants the light, since this version takes the socket.
Cons: no ground; you lose the bulb; a ceiling socket is an awkward place to plug into; and whatever you plug in hangs from the fitting.
DiCUNO 2-in-1 socket splitter - for a fitting that is simply too dim. One socket in, two out. The only way to genuinely increase output from a single-socket ceiling fitting without replacing the fitting, which in a rental is often the only option.
Who it is for: anyone with one weak bulb lighting a whole room and no authority to change the fixture. Who should skip it: anyone whose fitting has a shade they want to keep - two bulbs are wider and lower, and the shade usually will not go back on.
Cons: no UL listing stated; the fixture wattage limit applies to the pair; two bulbs in a confined fitting trap more heat; and it looks like what it is.
LPHUMEX motion sensor sockets, 3-pack - for a light nobody remembers to switch off. Motion plus dusk-to-dawn switching added to an existing fitting, three to a pack - enough for a garage, a basement stair and a porch.
Who it is for: anyone with an exposed utility fitting in a space they walk through with their hands full. Who should skip it: anyone fitting it inside a shade, where the sensor sees nothing, and anyone on a dimmer circuit.
Cons: no detection range, hold time or lux threshold published; adds height, so enclosed fittings often will not close; needs line of sight; not dimmable.

When a socket adapter is the wrong answer
If the lamp plugs into a wall, a plug-in dimmer is better than a socket dimmer in every way - the control is at hand height rather than under the shade. See the best plug-in dimmers.
If you want the switch on the cord rather than at either end, cord, foot and inline switches is the simpler route.
If what you actually want is control from the wall without rewiring, that is a battery remote rather than an adapter - wireless wall remotes covers it, and renter-friendly light switch controls puts the whole set of options side by side.
If the ceiling has no fitting at all, an adapter has nothing to screw into - ceiling lights that need no wiring is the page for that.

Dimming a lamp that has no dimmer
Westek 6009B Full Range Lamp Socket Dimmer, 100W, White
#ad Price as of October 9, 2026. How we earn
Screws between the bulb and the socket and turns an ordinary lamp into a dimmable one, with no wiring and nothing to install.
| Lumens | Not applicable |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | Depends on the bulb you fit |
| CRI | Not applicable |
| Power source | E26 socket in, E26 socket out; 100W maximum per the listing |
| Dimmable | It is the dimmer - full range, by hand |
| Renter-safe method | Screws in. No wiring, no tools, fully reversible. |
What it gets right
- Turns any lamp into a dimmable lamp without touching a wire
- Full-range rotary control rather than fixed brightness steps
- 100W rating published on the listing
- Unscrews and leaves with you when you move
What it costs you
- The 100W rating is an incandescent-era figure and this is a TRIAC-style manual dimmer, so it needs a dimmable bulb
- The control sits down at the socket, under the shade, so you reach past the bulb to use it
- Adds height between socket and bulb, which can stop a shade or harp fitting as before
- Stock on this listing has been thin

Turning a ceiling or closet socket into outlets
DiCUNO E26 to 2 Polarized Outlet Socket Adapter, White, 2-Pack
#ad Price as of October 9, 2026. How we earn
A UL Listed adapter that screws into a bulb socket and gives you two polarized outlets - the cheapest way to get power where only a light exists.
| Lumens | Not applicable |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | Not applicable |
| CRI | Not applicable |
| Power source | E26 screw base in, two polarized 2-prong outlets out |
| Dimmable | Not applicable |
| Renter-safe method | Screws into the existing socket. No wiring, fully reversible. |
What it gets right
- UL Listed, which much of this category is not
- Two outlets from one socket
- Two to a pack
- Unscrews cleanly when you leave
What it costs you
- Two-prong polarized only - there is no ground, so it is not for anything that needs one
- Fills the socket, so you lose the light unless you pick a version that keeps a bulb socket
- A ceiling socket is an awkward place to plug anything in
- Whatever you plug in hangs from the ceiling fitting

Two bulbs where there is one socket
DiCUNO 2 in 1 E26 Socket Splitter Adapter, 2-Pack
#ad Price as of October 9, 2026. How we earn
Doubles a single socket into two, which is the only way to add real output to a one-bulb ceiling fitting without changing the fitting.
| Lumens | Not applicable |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | Depends on the bulbs you fit |
| CRI | Not applicable |
| Power source | One E26 in, two E26 out |
| Dimmable | Depends on the bulbs you fit |
| Renter-safe method | Screws in. No wiring, fully reversible. |
What it gets right
- Doubles the lumens available from a single-socket fitting
- Two to a pack
- Works with any standard E26 bulb
- Costs less than any fixture change
What it costs you
- Two bulbs in a splitter are wider and lower than one, so a shade often will not go back on
- The fixture's own wattage rating still applies to the pair, not to each
- Two bulbs in a confined fitting means more trapped heat
- It looks like what it is, so it belongs where nobody looks up

Making an existing light switch itself on
LPHUMEX Motion Sensor Light Sockets, E26/E27, 3-Pack
A sensor in socket form: screw it in, screw the bulb into it, and a fitting that had no control gains motion and dusk-to-dawn switching.
| Lumens | Not applicable |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | Depends on the bulb you fit |
| CRI | Not applicable |
| Power source | E26/E27 socket in, E26/E27 socket out |
| Dimmable | No |
| Renter-safe method | Screws in. No wiring, fully reversible. |
What it gets right
- Adds motion and dusk-to-dawn control to a fitting with no switch of its own
- Three to a pack, which covers a garage, a porch and a basement stair
- Needs no wiring and no electrician
- Keeps the bulb you already chose
What it costs you
- The listing does not publish a detection range, a hold time or a lux threshold
- Adds height between socket and bulb, so enclosed fittings often will not close
- A sensor buried inside a shade cannot see anything - this wants an exposed fitting
- Not dimmable, and not for a fixture on a dimmer

FAQ
Questions people actually ask
+What is a light socket dimmer?
A small adapter that screws into a bulb socket, with the bulb then screwing into it. A rotary control on the adapter dims the bulb. It gives a lamp or a fixture dimming without a wall dimmer, without wiring and without anything permanent - which is why it is a renter's answer.
+Do socket dimmers work with LED bulbs?
Only with dimmable LED bulbs. A socket dimmer is a dimmer like any other and the usual rule applies: a non-dimmable LED on any dimmer will buzz, flicker, or fail early. The wattage ratings printed on these adapters are incandescent-era numbers and an LED load sits far below them.
+Can you turn a light socket into an outlet?
Yes - a socket-to-outlet adapter screws into the bulb socket and presents one or two standard outlets. It is a common fix in garages, basements and closets where there is a light and no receptacle. Most are two-prong polarized with no ground, so they are not for anything that needs an earth.
+Are light socket adapters safe?
The UL Listed ones, used within their rating, yes. Two cautions apply to all of them: the fixture's own maximum wattage still applies to everything you hang off it, and an adapter adds height, so an enclosed fitting may no longer close. Buy the listed versions and do not daisy-chain adapters.
+Can I put two bulbs in one socket?
A socket splitter does exactly that. It is the only way to add real output to a single-socket ceiling fitting without changing the fitting - but the fixture's wattage limit applies to the pair together, not to each bulb, and two bulbs rarely leave room for the original shade.
+Will a motion sensor socket work inside a shade?
No. The sensor has to see the room, so it needs an open or exposed fitting - a bare ceiling socket, a utility fitting, a porch light. Buried inside a drum shade it detects nothing, which is the single commonest disappointment with these.
