The verdict
For a facade or a large tree, the Twinkly Strings 250 - per-LED addressing plus a mapping step that makes effects follow the shape you actually hung. For a normal living-room tree, the 100-LED green wire version does the same thing at the right scale and price.
The distinction worth understanding before you spend: a set that changes color is not the same as a set that runs effects. Per-LED addressing is what lets light travel along a string instead of the whole run blinking together, and it is the only reason these cost what they do.
| Set | LEDs | Length | Addressing | Wire | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Twinkly Strings 250 | 250 RGB | 66.5 ft | Per LED, with mapping | Black | Facades, large trees |
| Twinkly Strings 100 | 100 RGB | 26 ft | Per LED, with mapping | Green | Living-room trees |
| Govee Tree Lights | 24 strings | 6.6 ft each | App control, RGB | Not published | Draping a tree fast |
| Govee Icicle | Not published | Not published | RGBIC segments | Not published | Eaves and gutter lines |

How these were judged
None of these publishes a lumen figure, so brightness is not a criterion anyone can honestly rank on. What can be judged is what the control system actually does.
- Addressing, stated plainly. Per-LED, segment-based or whole-string. This is the real difference and it is routinely blurred in marketing.
- Scheduling. A seasonal display that runs itself gets used; one that needs a switch flipped does not. Every set here schedules in its app.
- Wire color against the intended job. Trivial-sounding and highly visible by daylight.
- Honest about the white. RGB white is mixed, not native, and none of these will match a dedicated warm-white set.
We did not test these. Every figure is the retailer listing's own, linked below, and where nothing is published we have written that rather than guessing.

The picks
Twinkly Strings 250 - the pick. 250 individually addressable RGB LEDs over 66.5 ft on black wire. The app maps the string after you hang it, so effects run across the actual shape rather than along an assumed straight line.
Who it is for: a facade, a large outdoor tree, or anyone who wants effects rather than a color. Who should skip it: anyone decorating a green indoor tree - black wire stripes it - and anyone whose display is otherwise traditional warm white.
Cons: by far the most expensive string here; RGB white will not match a warm white set; setup is a genuine setup; no lumen figure published.
Twinkly Strings 100 - for an indoor tree. The same addressing and mapping at 100 LEDs over 26 ft, on green wire that vanishes into branches.
Who it is for: a living-room tree where you want real effects. Who should skip it: a facade - 26 ft does not reach - and anyone expecting one set to light a tall tree.
Cons: still expensive per foot against a plain set; app setup required; RGB white is an approximation; no lumen figure.
Govee Christmas Tree Lights - the fastest tree. Twenty-four short strings on a common head, draped down the tree rather than wrapped around it. It is a genuinely quicker way to light a tree, and quicker still to take down.
Who it is for: anyone who dreads the wrapping. Who should skip it: anyone with an unusually small or unusually large tree - the drop length is fixed and it bunches or falls short.
Cons: sized for a particular tree height; no lumen figure; needs the app for anything beyond the default; no other use once the tree is down.
Govee Icicle Lights - for an eave line. RGBIC segments in the icicle format, so color can travel along the gutter rather than the whole run glowing one shade.
Who it is for: a gutter or eave run, and renters who want smart holiday lighting with nothing fixed to the house. Who should skip it: anyone on a quiet traditional street where a color-cycling eave will be the loudest thing on it.
Cons: no lumen or length figure published; icicle sets tangle badly; another Wi-Fi device per set.

Living with them
Set the schedule once, in the first week. It is the feature that actually changes whether a display gets used, and the one people forget to configure - schedules and automations covers the general pattern.
Map before you finish decorating, not after. Twinkly's mapping needs to see the lights; doing it once the tree is fully dressed and the room is full of furniture is harder than doing it when you hang them.
Count your network devices. Each set is another Wi-Fi client. Three smart sets plus the rest of a smart home is a real load on a cheap router.

01

Mapped effects rather than a single color
Twinkly Strings, 250 RGB LED, 66.5 ft, Black Wire, App Controlled
#ad Price as of October 11, 2026. How we earn
The set that maps itself: the app photographs the string in place and then drives each LED individually, which is what separates it from a color-changing string.
| Lumens | Not published |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | RGB - any color, including a white approximation |
| CRI | Not applicable |
| Power source | Plugs into a standard outlet; 250 individually addressable RGB LEDs over 66.5 ft |
| Dimmable | Yes, in the app |
| Renter-safe method | Plugs in. Nothing fixed to the building. |
What it gets right
- Per-LED addressing, so effects move along the string instead of flashing together
- The mapping step means effects follow the real shape you hung
- 66.5 ft and 250 LEDs covers a large tree or a facade run
- Dimmable and schedulable in the app, unlike almost every other holiday set
What it costs you
- The most expensive string set here by a wide margin
- RGB white is an approximation - it will not match a dedicated warm-white set
- Setup is a real setup, not a plug-in
- Black wire is right on a facade and wrong on a green tree

02

A mapped tree rather than a mapped house
Twinkly Strings, 100 RGB LED, 26 ft, Green Wire, App Controlled
#ad Price as of October 11, 2026. How we earn
The same addressable system at tree scale on green wire - the version to buy if the effects are going on a Christmas tree and not a roofline.
| Lumens | Not published |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | RGB - any color, including a white approximation |
| CRI | Not applicable |
| Power source | Plugs into a standard outlet; 100 individually addressable RGB LEDs over 26 ft |
| Dimmable | Yes, in the app |
| Renter-safe method | Plugs in. Nothing fixed to the building. |
What it gets right
- Green wire, so it disappears into a tree
- Same per-LED addressing and mapping as the larger set
- Costs appreciably less than the 250-LED version
- Dimmable and schedulable in the app
What it costs you
- 26 ft and 100 LEDs is one small tree, not a house
- Still expensive against a plain warm-white set of the same length
- RGB white is an approximation
- App setup required before it does anything interesting

Dressing a tree without wrapping it
Govee Christmas Tree Lights, 6.6 ft x 24 Strings
Twenty-four short strings on a common head rather than one long wrap - you drape it down the tree instead of circling it, which is a genuinely faster way to light one.
| Lumens | Not published |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | RGB color-changing |
| CRI | Not applicable |
| Power source | Plugs into a standard outlet; 24 strings of 6.6 ft |
| Dimmable | Yes, in the app |
| Renter-safe method | Plugs in and drapes. Nothing fixed to the building. |
What it gets right
- Twenty-four drop strings is far quicker to hang than one long wrap
- App control, scheduling and color in the Govee ecosystem
- Comes down as fast as it goes up
- Even coverage without judging spacing by eye
What it costs you
- Built for a specific tree size - too small a tree and it bunches
- No lumen figure published
- Needs the app to do anything beyond its default
- Only useful on a tree; no other job

A gutter line that drips light
Govee Icicle Lights, Smart RGBIC, Outdoor
The icicle format with RGBIC segments, so the drops can run colors along the eave rather than all glowing the same shade at once.
| Lumens | Not published |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | RGBIC color-changing |
| CRI | Not applicable |
| Power source | Plugs into a standard outlet; outdoor rated per the listing |
| Dimmable | Yes, in the app |
| Renter-safe method | Plugs in and clips on. Nothing fixed to the building. |
What it gets right
- RGBIC segments, so color can travel along the run
- Icicle drops read as a deliberate eave line rather than a plain string
- App scheduling, so it is not a nightly chore
- Outdoor rated
What it costs you
- No lumen figure published
- Icicle sets tangle worse than plain strings in storage
- Wi-Fi per set, which adds to the household device count
- A color-cycling eave is a strong look that not every street suits

FAQ
Questions people actually ask
+What makes a Christmas light set smart?
Two different things get called smart. The weaker version is app on/off and color change, where the whole string does one color at a time. The stronger version is per-LED addressing, where every bulb is driven individually so effects travel along the string. Twinkly's mapping step goes further again - the app photographs the string in place so effects follow the real shape you hung.
+Are smart Christmas lights worth the money?
The effects are the headline and the scheduling is the real reason. A seasonal display you have to switch on and off by hand gets switched on less; one on an app schedule runs every evening without thought. If you would otherwise buy an outdoor timer anyway, the gap narrows considerably.
+Can smart Christmas lights do plain warm white?
They can do a white, but it is an RGB approximation mixed from colored diodes rather than a dedicated warm-white LED. It will not match a proper warm white set beside it. If a traditional warm white display is what you want, buy a warm white set and control it with a smart plug instead.
+Do I need a hub for smart Christmas lights?
Not for the sets here - they connect to the home Wi-Fi and run from their maker's app. That also means each set is another device on your network, which is worth noting if you are adding several.
+What is RGBIC?
RGBIC means the run is split into independently controlled segments rather than lighting as one block, so colors can sit side by side along the same string. It is the mid-point between a single-color string and full per-LED addressing.
+Black wire or green wire?
Green disappears into a tree and looks wrong on a wall or facade. Black disappears against a dark roofline or a night sky and stripes a green tree. Pick the wire for where the set is actually going - it is more visible by day than people expect.
