Laundry and utility room lighting

A laundry is a small room with one hardwired fixture you probably cannot replace, so this page is mostly about what you screw into it. That sounds like a limitation and turns out to cover almost everything, because all three of this room's constraints are bulb-level decisions.

• It is a damp location. A dryer vents moisture, a washer produces steam, and utility rooms are rarely well ventilated.
• The fixture is almost certainly enclosed. A sealed dome or a covered utility fitting traps the heat an LED driver makes, which is what actually kills bulbs here.
• There is a real color task. Whites versus off-whites, a stain you need to catch before it is heat-set, a care label in small gray type.

Damp rated and enclosed rated are separate specifications and a laundry usually wants both. Which is which is set out in wet rated vs damp rated; the heat side is in best LED bulbs for enclosed fixtures.

The Cree enclosed-rated A19 is the straightforward pick: 815 published lumens at 5000K with CRI 90+, a 25,000 hour rated life, and explicitly marked as good for enclosed fixtures. Elsewhere on this site 5000K is the wrong answer almost everywhere. Here it is right, because the room is used for four minutes at a time to do things that depend on seeing color accurately.

If the laundry is in a corner of a kitchen or a hallway you actually live in, the warm enclosed-rated Feit at 2700K and roughly 1,500 lumens is the better compromise - a 5000K bulb spilling into a living space is worse than a slightly harder time matching socks. And for the small recessed fittings that turn up in utility closets, the damp-rated Feit R20 at 450 lumens physically fits where a BR30 does not.

CRI 90+ across all three is not a luxury in this room. It is the specification that makes the color task possible - the argument is in best high-CRI LED bulbs.

The layout problem in a laundry is universal and rarely mentioned: the fixture is behind you. You stand facing the machines, the light comes from the ceiling behind your head, and your own body shadows the drum and the control panel - the two things you are looking at.

A plug-in linear bar fixes it. Mounted above the machines, or under a shelf or cabinet directly over them, a linkable T5 bar at 2,200 lumens puts light onto the front of the machines and into the drum from in front of you rather than behind. It runs from an ordinary outlet, it links to more units from one plug, and none of it is wiring. The mounting methods, including the adhesive ones, are in under-cabinet lighting that installs without tools.

Two smaller wins. Light inside a deep cupboard or over a folding surface if you have one - the case is the same as in pantry and shelf lighting. And keep any plug-in gear and its cord away from where water would go if a hose failed, which in a laundry is not a hypothetical.
