Dining room lighting

A dining room is unusually easy to plan, because it has one job: light a horizontal surface and the faces around it. There is no task lighting to worry about, no circulation problem, and the furniture never moves.

That means the room total matters much less than it does elsewhere. What matters is a single well-placed source at the right height, at the right warmth, with good color rendering - plus enough ambient light in the rest of the room that the lit table is not floating in darkness.

If you change one thing in a dining room, make it the bulb. A CRI 95 bulb at 2700K in the fitting you already have will do more for how a meal looks than a new fixture at CRI 80. Extremely common, and there are two good answers rather than a compromise:

1. A swag pendant. Hangs from a ceiling hook with the cord run across the ceiling to a wall outlet. It gets the geometry exactly right and costs one small hole in the ceiling. Detail in plug-in pendant lights.
