Closet lighting

This site is consistently skeptical about battery lighting. In plug-in vs battery vs rechargeable the conclusion is that a battery buys freedom from an outlet at a real cost in brightness and reliability, and that most people should plug in.

A closet is the exception, and the reason is duty cycle. You are in a closet for perhaps ten seconds at a time, a handful of times a day. A battery that would be flattened in an evening as a room light lasts months at that rate, so the thing that makes battery lighting frustrating elsewhere simply does not arise.

It is also, uniquely, a space with no alternative. Most closets have no outlet, no fixture and no daylight, and adding any of those is electrical work on the building. So the question is not whether battery is ideal - it is which battery light to buy.

Feit 13 in. rechargeable closet light - the pick for a full-size closet. 100 published lumens across a 13 inch bar, motion activated, rechargeable rather than eating disposable cells, and mountable on a wall, under a shelf or on a ceiling. The length matters as much as the output - a bar spreads light along a hanging rail where a puck drops one circle. Its 4000K is cooler than ideal for judging clothing color, and no CRI figure is published.

Joyzy motion closet light - for a cupboard or a single shelf. 100 lumens with a published CRI of 80+, a 2 m detection range, a 12-second auto-off and a listed 8 hours of continuous running. It publishes both lumens and CRI, which almost nothing in this category does. At 6000K it is a utility tone, and the short detection range means it triggers late in a deep walk-in - it is correctly scoped for a sink cabinet, a pantry shelf or a small wardrobe.

WOBANE COB strip - if there is an outlet within reach. A closet backing onto a bedroom wall sometimes has an outlet just outside it. Enbrighten 18 in. bar - for a walk-in with power. 1,245 lumens at CRI 92 with switchable color temperature. A walk-in closet is really a small room, and if it has an outlet it deserves proper light rather than a battery puck.

High and forward, angled back. The instinct is to put the light at the back of the closet, and it lights the back wall. Mount it on the underside of the top shelf near the front edge, angled inward and down, and the light travels the length of the hanging rail with your body out of its way.

Adhesive needs a clean, hard surface. Painted shelf undersides and melamine hold well. Raw chipboard, textured paint and anything dusty do not. Clean the spot first, and use the removal technique in no-drill lighting when you move.

Prefer a magnetic mount. Several battery bars ship with a magnetic backing plate you adhere once - the light then lifts off for charging without disturbing the adhesive. In a fitting you will recharge every few months, that detail is the difference between using it and abandoning it.

Keep it clear of fabric. Closet clearance rules were written when closet lights were hot incandescent bulbs, and an LED at 100 lumens is a different proposition. The habit is still correct: nothing should rest against a fitting, and nothing should be able to fall against one. Stored bedding on a top shelf is the usual culprit.
