The best outdoor porch ceiling lights

A covered porch ceiling is a damp location. Kurtzon defines damp as areas protected from weather and not subject to water saturation but exposed to moderate moisture, and lists covered exterior entries and canopies as exactly that. Wet location means built to withstand direct water exposure - dripping, splashing, hose-down or rain.

Practically: if rain can land on the fixture, buy wet. If the porch roof keeps it dry and only humidity and blown mist reach it, damp is the correct rating and the cheaper, wider choice.

The reason this page leads with the rating is that two of the three listings below publish the wrong one. The Amazon title for the Maxxima says wet rated while Maxxima's own page says suitable for damp locations. The Amazon title for the Progress fixture also says wet-rated, while Progress states damp location listed for use indoors or outdoors. We use the manufacturer in both cases.

1. A published rating from the maker. Damp minimum for a covered ceiling, verified on a manufacturer page rather than a listing title.
2. Sockets or integrated LED. Sockets keep the color choice in your hands and make a bug bulb possible; integrated means a sealed unit you never open.
3. Published output, or a real socket count. Either a lumen figure or the number of sockets and their maximum wattage.
4. Diameter. A porch flush mount that is too small looks like a mistake from the driveway.
5. Documentation. A model number, dimensions and a warranty on a manufacturer page - which only one of these fully provides.

Progress Lighting P5745-30 - the pick. Two E26 sockets at 60W each under an acrylic diffuser, 10.25 inches across, damp location listed on Progress's own page, with mounting hardware and instructions in the box. Two sockets mean you reach 1,600 lumens with ordinary bulbs, or fit two amber bug bulbs, or dim it - the flexibility a sealed fixture cannot offer.
Cons: damp listed, not wet, so it is wrong for an exposed spot despite what the marketplace title claims; 60W maximum per socket; one-year limited warranty.

Maxxima MEL-9175W - the fit-and-forget option. 1,000 lumens of 3000K from an integrated LED rated for 50,000 hours, ETL listed, with a three-year warranty and an operating range from -22F to 113F. Nothing to change, and a slim profile on a low porch ceiling.
Cons: damp rated despite the Amazon title's wet claim; not dimmable; and when the LED finally goes, the fixture is the replacement.

Designers Fountain 2067-BK - cast aluminum on a budget. A single-socket cast aluminum fixture with frosted glass, damp rated, hardware included - the traditional builder-grade porch light, in black.
Cons: the listing gives two maximum wattages, 100W in the bullets and 60W in the description, and two different diameters in the same page; Designers Fountain publishes no page for it; one-year warranty.

This is a hardwired job. All three replace an existing ceiling box. If you rent, or there is no box in the porch ceiling, the alternatives are a solar fixture or a switched lantern on the wall instead.

Pick the bulb color for the street, not the room. Warm light reads as welcoming and shows less blue haze in rain; the case is in 2700K vs 3000K for outdoor lighting.

Check enclosure before you fit a specialty bulb. These fixtures have closed diffusers, so a dusk-to-dawn or bug bulb needs its own enclosed rating - the Feit bug bulb publishes one, most do not.

Two small fixtures beat one big one on a long porch. Light falls off fast, and a single 1,000 lumen fixture at one end leaves the far chairs in the dark.
