Solar or plug-in decides most of it
A solar path light is a stake with a panel on top: push it into the ground and it lights at dusk. It needs no wiring, which is why it suits renters and quick jobs, but how long and how brightly it runs depends on the day's sun.
A low-voltage kit runs every light from a transformer plugged into an outdoor outlet, switched by a dusk sensor or timer. It takes a cable run to install, and in return it comes on at the same brightness every night, winter or summer. The general trade-off is in solar vs plug-in outdoor lighting.

Placing them well
Mark the path, do not flood it. Path lights are there to show edges and steps. A handful of warm pools along a walkway looks better and works better than a runway of bright stakes.
Give solar panels sun. A stake in shade all day will not charge fully. Put solar lights where they see direct sun, and use low voltage along shaded stretches.
