Why this page does not lead with lumens
Every other roundup on this site opens with a published output figure, because indoors the question is always whether a light produces enough. String lights are the exception, and it is worth being straight about why.
Almost no manufacturer publishes a total lumen figure for a string set. What they publish is bulb count and watts per bulb - twelve bulbs at 1W, fifteen at 11W - which tells you about consumption rather than output. We could multiply those into a guess and we are not going to.
It matters less here than it would indoors. A string across a patio is doing what the accent layer does in a room: creating atmosphere and giving the eye something to land on, not lighting a task. Nobody chops vegetables under it.
So the ranking is on the things that are published and that do decide whether you are happy: bulb material, cord rating, length, and dimming.
