Specifications are the manufacturer or retailer published figures, compiled by hand. We have not measured them, and where a figure is not published we write "Not published" rather than guess.

The verdict
Buy the Verilux HappyLight Lucent if you want the cheapest honest version of this product, and the HappyLight Lumi Plus if you want to start gently - it adds adjustable brightness and a countdown timer for a few dollars more, and those two things are what make a morning routine stick.
This is an unusually easy category to shop, because every lamp worth considering publishes the same pair of claims: 10,000 lux and UV-free. Once both are on the listing, the lamps are separated by handling rather than by output - can you dim it, does it time itself, and will it still be useful on the desk in April.
| Lamp | Stated lux | Brightness | Color | Timer | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Verilux HappyLight Lucent | 10,000, UV-free | One setting | Fixed white | No | $39.99 |
| Verilux HappyLight Lumi Plus | 10,000, UV-free | Adjustable | Fixed white | Countdown | $42.99 |
| Verilux HappyLight Luxe | 10,000, UV-free | Adjustable | Adjustable | Countdown | $69.99 |
| Circadian Optics Lumos | 10,000, UV-free | Not published | Fixed white | No | $69.99 |

Lux is not lumens, and the difference costs you the session
Everywhere else on this site, light is measured in lumens - the total output of a lamp. This is the one category that uses lux instead, and the two are not interchangeable.
Lumens leave the lamp. Lux arrives at your face. Because lux is measured at a surface, it depends entirely on how far away that surface is, and it falls off fast. A lamp rated 10,000 lux at 7 inches delivers far less at 18 inches, and the listing rarely makes that prominent.
The practical consequence is simple and widely ignored: the distance in the instructions is part of the specification, not a suggestion. Sitting at a comfortable arm's length from a lamp specified at close range is how people conclude the lamp did nothing.
03
How these were judged
Four criteria, in the order they actually change the buying decision.
- 10,000 lux and UV-free, stated on the listing. Both claims, in writing. Every lamp here clears this; a great many lamps sold as bright white desk lamps do not, and are not substitutes.
- Adjustable brightness. The feature most likely to decide whether a lamp is still in use in week three.
- A timer. A 20 to 30 minute session you are timing yourself turns into a session you keep checking the clock through.
- Whether it is useful the rest of the year. A lamp with color adjustment goes on being a desk lamp in May. A single-mode panel goes in a drawer.
We did not test these and we make no clinical claims about them. Every figure here is the retailer listing's own, linked below, and where nothing is published we have written that rather than estimating it.

The picks
Verilux HappyLight Lucent - the pick. 10,000 lux, UV-free, one touch, detachable stand, forty dollars. It does the thing the category exists to do and nothing else.
Who it is for: anyone buying their first one, and anyone buying it as a gift where a complicated device would be a burden. Who should skip it: anyone who knows bright light gives them a headache - you want a brightness control, and this has none.
Cons: single brightness; no timer; small panel, so head position matters; no lumen, kelvin or CRI figure published.
Verilux HappyLight Lumi Plus - the one most people should actually buy. Same panel and same claims, plus adjustable brightness and a countdown timer, for roughly three dollars more at the prices we checked.
Who it is for: anyone building a morning routine, and anyone easing in over a first week. Who should skip it: nobody, really, unless the extra three dollars decides it - which is a strange way for a category to be priced and is the main reason the Lucent is not an obvious buy.
Cons: no color adjustment; still no lumen, kelvin or CRI figure; modest panel for the money.
Verilux HappyLight Luxe - the one that survives spring. Adjustable brightness and adjustable color on the largest panel of the three, so in April it becomes a warm desk lamp rather than clutter.
Who it is for: a permanent desk, especially a home office where it can do two jobs. Who should skip it: anyone with a small desk - it takes real space - and anyone who only wants the twenty minutes.
Cons: about the price of two Lucents; no kelvin values published for the color slider; largest footprint here; no CRI, so it is not a lamp to judge color by.
Circadian Optics Lumos - for a cramped desk. The panel pivots, which is the practical answer to a desk where you cannot move the chair to suit the lamp.
Who it is for: a tight corner desk or a shared table where the lamp has to be aimed rather than placed. Who should skip it: anyone who wanted dimming - it is Luxe money without the Luxe controls.
Cons: no brightness levels published; no timer; full-spectrum is marketing language, not a measured figure.
05
Living with one
Put it where you already sit in the morning. The lamp that works is the one beside the breakfast table or the keyboard. A lamp that requires you to go and sit somewhere specific for twenty minutes is a lamp that gets used twice.
Off to one side, not straight ahead. The usual instruction is to have the lamp angled towards you rather than stared into, which is also why the pivot on the Lumos and the stands on the Verilux lamps matter more than they sound.
It is not a room light. None of these will fix a dark apartment in January - they are a twenty-minute appliance aimed at a face. The room is a separate problem, and it is the one lighting a home through winter and how many lumens a room needs are for.
The morning half has an evening half. If you are buying a lamp because dark mornings are hard, a sunrise alarm clock addresses the same complaint from the other end and costs less than the Luxe.

A first light therapy lamp
Verilux HappyLight Lucent Light Therapy Lamp
#ad Price as of October 17, 2026. How we earn
The one specification this category is bought on is 10,000 lux, UV-free - and this is the cheapest lamp from an established brand that states both plainly.
| Lumens | Not published - rated in lux, not lumens |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | Not published; the listing says bright white |
| CRI | Not published |
| Power source | Plugs in (corded LED panel) with a detachable stand |
| Dimmable | No - one-touch on and off, a single brightness |
| Renter-safe method | Sits on a desk and plugs into an outlet. Nothing is fixed to anything. |
What it gets right
- States 10,000 lux and UV-free, the two figures this category is actually bought on
- One-touch operation, which is the right design for something used at 7am
- Detachable stand sets the angle rather than leaving you to prop it
- The least expensive Verilux, so the brand premium is small
What it costs you
- Single brightness - you cannot start low in week one and work up
- No timer, so you are watching the clock yourself
- Lux is quoted at a stated distance; sit further back and you get less
- Small panel, so head position matters more than on a larger lamp

Working up to a full session
Verilux HappyLight Lumi Plus Light Therapy Lamp
#ad Price as of October 17, 2026. How we earn
The same 10,000 lux UV-free panel with adjustable brightness and a countdown timer, which is what turns a lamp into a routine you can hold to.
| Lumens | Not published - rated in lux, not lumens |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | Not published; the listing says bright white |
| CRI | Not published |
| Power source | Plugs in (corded LED panel) with a detachable stand |
| Dimmable | Yes - adjustable brightness, plus a countdown timer |
| Renter-safe method | A desk lamp. Plugs in, nothing mounted. |
What it gets right
- Adjustable brightness, so a cautious first week at a low setting is possible
- Countdown timer ends the session instead of you watching a clock
- Same stated 10,000 lux and UV-free claim as the rest of the range
- Costs only a few dollars more than the single-brightness model
What it costs you
- Brightness and timer are the only additions over the Lucent
- No color adjustment - that is the step up to the Luxe
- Still no published lumen, kelvin or CRI figure
- Panel size is modest for the price

A lamp that stays on the desk all day
Verilux HappyLight Luxe Light Therapy Lamp
#ad Price as of October 17, 2026. How we earn
Adjustable brightness and adjustable color, which is the version that works as an ordinary desk lamp once the morning session is over.
| Lumens | Not published - rated in lux, not lumens |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | Adjustable; no kelvin values published |
| CRI | Not published |
| Power source | Plugs in (corded LED panel) with a stand |
| Dimmable | Yes - adjustable brightness and color, with a countdown timer |
| Renter-safe method | A desk lamp. Plugs in, nothing mounted. |
What it gets right
- Color adjustment makes it a usable warm desk lamp in the evening, not dead weight
- Largest panel of the Verilux lamps here, so head position is less fussy
- Brightness, color and timer all adjustable
- One purchase covers the therapy job and the task-lamp job
What it costs you
- Roughly the price of two Lucents
- No kelvin values published for the color settings, only a slider
- Bigger footprint on a desk that is probably already full
- No lumen or CRI figure, so it cannot be compared against a proper task lamp
Spec source: Amazon listing - Verilux HappyLight Luxe, 10,000 lux, UV-free, adjustable brightness and color, countdown timer and stand - retrieved September 3, 2026.

Getting the angle right in a small space
Circadian Optics Lumos 10,000 Lux Light Therapy Lamp
#ad Price as of October 17, 2026. How we earn
A 10,000 lux UV-free panel on a pivot, which solves the practical problem nobody mentions: aiming light at your face without moving your chair.
| Lumens | Not published - rated in lux, not lumens |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | Not published; the listing says ultra bright white, full-spectrum |
| CRI | Not published |
| Power source | Plugs in (corded LED panel) |
| Dimmable | Not published |
| Renter-safe method | Sits on a desk and plugs in. Nothing fixed. |
What it gets right
- Adjustable panel pivots, so the beam can be aimed from a cramped desk
- States 10,000 lux and UV-free, like the Verilux lamps
- Compact enough to leave out permanently, which is what makes it get used
- Slim profile takes very little desk depth
What it costs you
- No brightness levels published, so assume one setting
- No timer
- Priced level with the top Verilux without the color adjustment
- Full-spectrum is a marketing phrase, not a measured figure

FAQ
Questions people actually ask
+What should I look for in a light therapy lamp?
Two stated figures and one feature. The figures are 10,000 lux at a stated distance and UV-free; a lamp that does not print both is not in this category whatever it is called. The feature is adjustable brightness, because starting at a lower setting is how most people get through the first week without a headache.
+Is 10,000 lux the same as 10,000 lumens?
No, and the confusion is the single biggest trap in this category. Lumens measure total light leaving a lamp. Lux measures light arriving on a surface - here, your face - and it falls away sharply with distance. A 10,000 lux rating is only true at the distance the maker quotes, which is why sitting further back than the instructions say quietly halves your session.
+How long do you use a light therapy lamp for?
The commonly published guidance is around 20 to 30 minutes in the morning, within an hour or so of waking, with the lamp off to one side rather than stared at directly. Follow the instructions that come with your lamp rather than a figure from a website, and raise anything that affects your health with a clinician - this is a lighting site, not a medical one.
+Does light therapy actually work for winter low mood?
Light exposure is a well-studied influence on sleep timing and seasonal mood, and NIH's public health guidance describes light therapy as an established approach for seasonal symptoms. What that does not mean is that any bright lamp is a treatment. If symptoms are significant, the lamp is a question for a clinician rather than a purchase decision.
+Can I just use a very bright desk lamp instead?
Not reliably. An ordinary desk lamp is specified in lumens and aimed at a surface, not at a face, and almost none publish a lux figure at any distance. You would be guessing at the only number that defines the category. If you want a bright desk lamp, buy a bright desk lamp - but do not assume it does this job.
+Do light therapy lamps emit UV?
The ones here all state UV-free on the listing, which is the standard claim in this category and the one to insist on. A lamp that does not say so should be assumed not to have tested for it.
