Specifications are the manufacturer or retailer published figures, compiled by hand. We have not measured them, and where a figure is not published we write "Not published" rather than guess.
01
Why the names matter
A light fixture has about eight parts, nearly all of them buyable separately for a few dollars, and the only thing standing between a broken lamp and a working one is usually knowing what the broken bit is called. "The metal bit that holds the shade" returns nothing useful. "9 inch lamp harp" returns the exact part.
This page is the vocabulary, split into the two cases that matter: a fixture mounted to a ceiling, and a lamp that stands on the floor or a table. They share more parts than people expect.
02
A ceiling fixture, from the box down
Every hardwired fixture hangs off the same four inches of hardware, whatever it looks like below that.
| Part | What it is | What it does | Bought separately? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electrical box | The metal or plastic box in the ceiling | Carries the weight and houses the connections | Yes - but it is an electrician job |
| Crossbar / strap | A flat metal bar screwed across the box | The fixture bolts to this, not to the ceiling | Yes, and often the missing piece |
| Nipple | A short threaded rod, usually 1/8 IPS | Joins the fixture to the crossbar | Yes, in several lengths |
| Canopy | The shallow cup against the ceiling | Hides the box and the wiring; carries nothing | Sometimes |
| Stem, chain or downrod | The drop between canopy and body | Sets the hanging height | Yes, for pendants |
| Body / arms | The visible structure | Holds the sockets and the shades | Rarely |
| Socket | The threaded bulb holder | Makes contact with the bulb | Yes - the commonest repair part |
| Fitter | The ring or clamp holding glass | Holds the shade or diffuser onto the body | Sometimes |
03
A table or floor lamp, base to finial
A lamp is the same idea turned upside down, with one extra system - the shade support - that ceiling fixtures mostly do not have.
| Part | What it is | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Base | The weighted body | Stands the lamp up and hides the pipe |
| Lamp pipe / nipple | Threaded rod up the middle, 1/8 IPS | Structural spine; the cord runs through it |
| Cord and plug | Usually SPT-1 or SPT-2 flex | Power, and often the switch |
| Socket | The bulb holder, with its switch | Takes the bulb; on/off or 3-way lives here |
| Saddle | A small bracket at the socket base | The harp clips into this - standard size is 3/8 in. |
| Harp | U-shaped wire bracket over the bulb | Carries the shade; sized by height, 8-10 in. typical |
| Shade fitter | Spider, uno or clip-on | How the shade attaches - three incompatible systems |
| Finial | Decorative nut on the harp top | Clamps the shade down so it sits straight |
The fitter is the part that catches people out. There are three systems and they do not interchange. A spider fitter sits on a harp and is held by a finial - the common one. An uno fitter threads directly onto the socket collar and needs no harp at all. A clip-on grips the bulb itself. Buying a shade without checking which one your lamp uses is the single most common lamp-parts mistake, and it is solvable with an adapter rather than a return.
04
The parts worth keeping in a drawer
A spare socket: the DiCUNO UL Listed 3-way socket. The part that actually fails. UL Listed, which much of this category is not, and 3-way so a lamp keeps its low-medium-high after the repair.
Who should skip it: anyone whose lamp was never 3-way and never will be - the plain on/off version is cheaper and simpler.
A harp in the standard size: the 9 in. harp set with a 3/8 in. saddle. 9 inches is the commonest table-lamp harp height and 3/8 in. is the standard saddle, so this fits more lamps than any other single size. A finial is in the box.
Who should skip it: anyone whose lamp uses an uno fitter - there is no harp on those at all.
Spare finials: the Creative Hobbies ELY505 brass finial. The part most likely to be missing from a second-hand lamp, and the reason its shade sits crooked. Solid brass, 1 in. tall, two per pack.
Who should skip it: anyone with nickel or black lamp hardware - brass will not match.
The adapter that rescues a wrong shade: the threaded uno bridge adapter. Bridges a spider shade onto an uno lamp, which is the mismatch people discover after the shade has arrived.
Who should skip it: anyone with a slip uno rather than a threaded uno - they are different, and this is the threaded one.

Where to go next
Sizing a shade or a harp is its own set of measurements - lamp shade, harp and fitter sizes has the charts.
Naming the bulb rather than the fixture - bulb shapes and bases explained does for A19, BR30, E12 and E26 what this page does for canopies and harps.
Taking a hardwired fixture off the ceiling and plugging it in instead - converting a hardwired fixture to plug-in is the renter route.

DiCUNO UL Listed 3-Way Lamp Socket Replacement, Gold
#ad Price as of October 9, 2026. How we earn

| Lumens | Not applicable |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | Depends on the bulb you fit |
| CRI | Not applicable |
| Power source | E26 3-way socket |
| Dimmable | 3-way stepped switching rather than continuous dimming |

What it gets right
- UL Listed, stated on the listing
- 3-way, so a lamp keeps its low-medium-high after the repair
- Socket only, which is the right buy when the cord is sound
- One of the cheapest parts on the site
What it costs you
- Socket only - no cord, no plug, no harp
- One per pack
- Gold will not match a nickel or black lamp
- A failed socket on a lamp with a frayed cord means you should be replacing both

The size most table lamps take
Unbranded 9 in. Detachable Lamp Shade Harp with Standard 3/8 in. Saddle and Finial, 2 Sets, Polished Brass
#ad Price as of October 9, 2026. How we earn
A 9-inch harp with the standard 3/8-inch saddle and a finial in the box - the combination that fits the largest share of American table lamps.

|---|---|
| Color temperature | Not applicable |
| CRI | Not applicable |
| Power source | Not applicable |
| Dimmable | Not applicable |
| Renter-safe method | Lamp hardware. Nothing fixed to the building. |
What it gets right
- 9 in. is the commonest harp height on a table lamp
- Standard 3/8 in. saddle, which is the size the saddle on most lamps is made for
- A finial is included, so the shade actually clamps down
- Two sets per pack - a pair of matching lamps in one order
What it costs you
- Harp height has to suit the shade you own; 9 in. is common, not universal
- A detachable harp is less rigid than a one-piece one under a heavy shade
- Polished brass only on this listing
- Says nothing about the finial thread, which is the other size that has to match

The part that actually holds the shade on
Creative Hobbies ELY505 Solid Brass Finial for Lamp Shades, 1 in. Tall, 2-Pack
#ad Price as of October 9, 2026. How we earn
A plain solid-brass finial in the standard size - the cheapest part on a lamp and the one whose absence makes the shade sit crooked.

|---|---|
| Color temperature | Not applicable |
| CRI | Not applicable |
| Power source | Not applicable |
| Dimmable | Not applicable |
| Renter-safe method | Lamp hardware. Nothing fixed to the building. |
What it gets right
- Solid brass rather than plated pot metal
- 1 in. tall, so it finishes a shade without becoming the feature
- Two to a pack
- A named model number, which is rare on lamp parts
What it costs you
- Plain by design - it is hardware, not decoration
- Brass will not match nickel or black lamp hardware
- Thread size still has to match your harp
- Does nothing for a shade that has the wrong fitter in the first place

Fitting a spider shade to an uno lamp
Unbranded Threaded Uno Bridge Adapter for Lamp Shades, Nickel
#ad Price as of October 9, 2026. How we earn

|---|---|
| Color temperature | Not applicable |
| CRI | Not applicable |
| Power source | Not applicable |
| Dimmable | Not applicable |
| Renter-safe method | Lamp hardware. Nothing fixed to the building. |
What it gets right
- Converts between the two fitter systems rather than forcing you to return the shade
- Threaded uno, which is the version that screws onto the socket collar
- Nickel finish
- Costs less than any replacement shade
What it costs you
- Threaded uno and slip uno are different things, and this is the threaded one
- Adds a visible ring at the top of the shade on a lamp where you can see it
- One per pack at this listing
- Does nothing for a clip-on shade, which is a third system again

FAQ
Questions people actually ask
+What are the parts of a light fixture called?
Working down from the ceiling: the crossbar (the metal strap screwed to the electrical box), the canopy (the cup that hides the box), the stem or chain, the body, the socket, the shade or diffuser, and the fitter or harp that holds the shade. On a table lamp the equivalents are the base, the cord, the socket, the harp and the finial.
+What is the canopy on a light fixture?
The shallow cup pressed against the ceiling that covers the electrical box and the wiring. It is purely a cover - it carries no weight and does no electrical work. A canopy that will not sit flush is almost always a crossbar fitted at the wrong depth rather than a faulty canopy.
+What is a fixture harp?
The U-shaped wire bracket on a table or floor lamp that straddles the bulb and supports the shade. It clips into a saddle at the socket base and is held at the top by a finial. Harps are sold by height, most commonly 8, 9 and 10 inches, and the height determines how the shade sits.
+What is a finial?
The small decorative nut that screws onto the top of the harp and clamps the shade down. It is the cheapest part of a lamp and the one most often missing, which is why so many second-hand lamps have shades that sit crooked.
+Can you buy light fixture parts separately?
Most of them, yes. Sockets, harps, finials, cords, shade adapters and crossbars are all sold as individual parts for a few dollars, which is why rewiring or repairing a lamp is usually far cheaper than replacing it. Hardwired ceiling fixtures are the exception - makers rarely sell individual arms or glass.
+What is the threaded rod inside a lamp called?
A nipple, or a lamp pipe when it runs the length of the body. It is threaded 1/8 IPS as a near-universal standard, which is why sockets, harps and bases from different makers generally screw together.
