Specifications are the manufacturer or retailer published figures, compiled by hand. We have not measured them, and where a figure is not published we write "Not published" rather than guess.

Three problems, three fixes
Rental bathrooms tend to fail in the same three ways. The fixture over the mirror is dim or glary; it lights your face only from above, so every shadow falls downward; and at night the only choice is the full glare of that fixture or darkness.
None of those needs an electrician. Each has a fix that is a bulb swap, a plug-in or a rechargeable light - things your lease almost certainly allows, and things that leave with you. The permission tiers are set out in can you change a light fixture in an apartment.
| Problem | Renter fix | Fixing | Permission |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dim or glary vanity bar | High-CRI globe bulbs | Bulb swap | None |
| Shadows from one light above | Rechargeable sconces beside the mirror | Adhesive or one screw | Usually none |
| Dim sealed ceiling dome | An enclosed-rated brighter bulb | Bulb swap | None |
| Glare at 2am | Motion night light | Plugs in | None |

The picks
KGC G25 milky globe - the first thing to change. CRI 90+ at 2700K behind milky glass. Most rental vanity bars take globe bulbs, and a diffusing globe is what stops a bar that points at your face from glaring.
Cons: no lumen figure, only a 40W equivalence; frosting costs a little output.
Sunco G25 globe - if the bar needs more light. 500 published lumens at 2700K and CRI 90, dimmable. Where the KGC is about comfort, the Sunco is about output with an honest number on it.
Cons: clear filament glass glares if the bar faces you; 500 lumens each means you need several.
NIORSUN rechargeable sconces - light from the sides. 300 lumens each at a 3000K setting, dimmable, stated at 25 hours on full, mounted with adhesive or a screw. A pair either side of the mirror lights your face from the sides, which a fixture above never can. More options are in best rechargeable wall sconces.
Cons: no damp rating published - keep them away from the shower; they need charging.
AUVON motion night light - for the 2am trip. Motion and dusk-to-dawn sensing, adjustable from 1 to 50 lumens, in warm white. Dark until you move, then just enough to see the floor.
Cons: takes the outlet; motion lights can trigger for pets.
Feit Electric A19, enclosed rated - for a sealed ceiling dome. About 1,500 lumens at 2700K and CRI 90+, rated for enclosed and damp fixtures - the bulb for a dim bathroom dome. Why the rating matters is in best LED bulbs for enclosed fixtures.
Cons: output is given as an equivalence; still runs warm in a sealed dome.

Doing it the renter way
Box and label the original bulbs. They go back in at move-out, and the new ones come with you - see taking your lighting with you.
Keep it dry. The rechargeable sconces and the night light here are not published as damp rated. Mount and plug them in by the mirror and the door, not beside the tub or shower.
Prefer plug-in vanity lights? If there is an outlet near the mirror, plug-in fixtures give more output than rechargeables - covered in plug-in vanity lighting.
Hate the fixture itself? A cover or a better-looking globe can change how it looks without changing the fixture - see covering an ugly rental fixture.

Vanity bars aimed straight at your face
KGC G25 Milky Glass Globe LED, 2700K
#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn
CRI 90+ at 2700K behind milky glass - the diffusing version, which is what a mirror bar pointed at you actually needs.
| Lumens | Not published (40W equivalent) |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | 2700K |
| CRI | 90+ |
| Power source | Screws into a standard E26 socket |
| Dimmable | Yes |
| Renter-safe method | A bulb swap. Fully reversible. |
What it gets right
- Milky glass diffuses, which removes the mirror-bar glare problem
- CRI 90+ published
- Dimmable, so a bright bar can be turned down at night
What it costs you
- No lumen figure published - only a 40W equivalence
- Frosting costs a little output against clear glass
- 40W equivalent is modest per bulb

Vanity bars where the bulbs are meant to be seen
Sunco Lighting G25 Globe LED Vanity Bulb, Clear Filament
#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn
500 lumens at 2700K with a published CRI of 90 - the globe format done properly, so a mirror bar renders skin tone honestly.
| Lumens | 500 lm |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | 2700K |
| CRI | 90 |
| Power source | Screws into a standard E26 socket (5W, 60W equivalent) |
| Dimmable | Yes |

What it gets right
- CRI 90 published, which is the whole point in front of a mirror
- 500 lm each - three or four across a bar lands in the right range
- UL listed and rated for indoor or outdoor use
What it costs you
- Clear filament glass glares when the bar points at your eyes
- 500 lm is modest, so you need several
- Enclosed-fixture rating is not stated

A sconce that publishes how bright it is
NIORSUN Battery Operated Wall Sconces, Set of 2
#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn
300 lumens per sconce with 20 to 100 percent dimming and a stated 25 hours at full brightness or 72 dimmed - the rechargeable sconce that gives you both numbers you need.
| Lumens | 300 lm per sconce |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | 3000K-6500K, plus 9 RGB colors |
| CRI | Not published |
| Power source | Rechargeable 5,200 mAh bulb - 25 h at full output, 72 h dimmed (stated) |
| Dimmable | Yes, 20-100 percent |
| Renter-safe method | Screws or adhesive to the wall. No wiring, no outlet, no cord. |
What it gets right
- Publishes 300 lm AND runtime at both full and dimmed output
- 3000K warm white available, which suits a living space
- 20-100 percent dimming range
What it costs you
- 300 lm is accent-to-ambient, not enough to light a room alone
- Smaller battery than the 10,000 mAh option
- No CRI published

A route that only needs light when you walk it
AUVON Plug-in LED Motion Night Light, 4 Pack
#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn
Motion plus dusk-to-dawn sensing with 1 to 50 lumens adjustable - it stays dark until you move, then gives you exactly enough to see the floor.

|---|---|
| Color temperature | Warm white |
| CRI | Not published |
| Power source | Plugs into an outlet |
| Dimmable | Yes, 1-50 lm |
| Renter-safe method | Plugs in. Nothing fixed, nothing wired. |
What it gets right
- Motion sensing means it is dark when nobody needs it
- Caps at 50 lm, so it cannot over-light a hallway
- Four in a pack covers a whole route
What it costs you
- Motion lights click on unexpectedly for pets and restless sleepers
- No Kelvin figure published beyond warm white
- Takes the outlet

05
High output in a fixture that traps heat
Feit Electric 100W Equivalent A19 LED, 2700K, Enclosed-Rated
#ad No live price right now, so we show none. How we earn
A 100W-equivalent A19 at 2700K and CRI 90+ that is rated for enclosed and damp fixtures - the combination that stops a bright bulb dying early inside a glass dome.
| Lumens | About 1,500 lm (100W equivalent) |
|---|---|
| Color temperature | 2700K |
| CRI | 90+ |
| Power source | Screws into a standard E26 socket |
| Dimmable | Yes |
| Renter-safe method | A bulb swap. Nothing fixed, fully reversible. |
What it gets right
- Explicitly rated for enclosed and damp-rated fixtures, which most bright LEDs are not
- CRI 90+ at a mainstream price
- 2700K, so it matches the rest of a warm-lit home
What it costs you
- Enclosed-rated bulbs still run hotter in a sealed dome than in open air
- Output is given as a wattage equivalence rather than a measured figure
- Larger envelope than some flush fittings will take - measure first

FAQ
Questions people actually ask
+How can I make my rental bathroom brighter?
Start with the bulbs in the existing fixture - better bulbs are a swap, not an alteration. Then add light beside the mirror with rechargeable or plug-in sconces, so your face is lit from the sides as well as from above.
+Can renters change a bathroom light fixture?
Not without permission - replacing a fixture is electrical work. Bulb swaps, plug-in lights and rechargeable lights need no permission at all.
+What bulbs are best for a bathroom vanity?
Globe bulbs with a high CRI in a warm white. The KGC G25 milky globe and the Sunco G25 here both publish CRI 90 or above, which is what makes skin tones look right in a mirror.
+Are rechargeable sconces safe in a bathroom?
Keep them by the mirror, well away from the shower. The rechargeable sconces here do not publish a damp rating, so treat them as dry-location lights.
+What is the best night light for a bathroom?
A warm, dim, motion-activated one. The AUVON adjusts from 1 to 50 lumens and only comes on when you walk past, so it lights the floor without waking you up.
