Hanging Christmas lights without nails

By Sawyer V. ยท Last verified October 11, 2026

Nothing about a holiday display should need a nail. The right clip holds better than a staple ever did and leaves the house exactly as it was.

The verdict

Use all-purpose clips that take both a gutter lip and a shingle edge - the Projectpak clips for a typical roof, or the 200-piece set if the run is long. Buy about one clip per foot of run, and never put a nail or a staple anywhere near a light string.

A clip is not the compromise option. It holds a C9 bulb upright and facing out, which a nail through the wire does not, and it comes off in January leaving the fascia exactly as it was. Staples through cable are also how insulation gets nicked, which is a genuine problem on a wet roof.

What grips what. Check which edges your house actually offers before ordering.

02

Why clips beat every alternative

Nails and staples damage two things. The obvious one is the fascia, which ends up with a line of holes that fill with water. The less obvious one is the cable: a staple that pinches or nicks the insulation on an outdoor circuit creates a fault path exactly where rain will find it. Neither problem exists with a clip.

Clips aim the bulb. A C9 or C7 bulb held in a clip points outward and upright along the whole run. The same string nailed through its wire sags and the bulbs rotate, which is why hand-fixed runs look uneven from the street even when the spacing is right.

And they come off. January, cold hands, a ladder: the difference between unclipping a run and prising out eighty staples is the difference between an hour and an afternoon.

03

The clips, and who each is for

Projectpak all-purpose clips - the pick. Takes a gutter lip or a shingle edge without swapping parts, which matters because most rooflines need both within one run.
Who it is for: a typical roof with a mix of gutter and shingle edge. Who should skip it: anyone with covered gutters - the guard removes the lip - and anyone fixing to brick, which has no edge at all.
Cons: plastic goes brittle after a few frost seasons; leaf guards defeat the gutter mode; you will lose some every year; nothing published about temperature rating.

All-purpose clips, set of 200 - for a long run. Two hundred clips for roughly what a hundred cost elsewhere - the pack for a big frontage plus the inevitable losses.
Who it is for: long or multi-elevation runs, and anyone who hangs lights every year. Who should skip it: a small porch, where 200 clips is twenty years of supply.
Cons: unbranded; generic sizing is a compromise across bulb shapes; frost brittleness applies; no published UV or temperature rating.

Shingle and gutter clips for C7 and C9, 100 pack - for big bulbs specifically. Sized for the large shapes, which generic clips do not hold upright.
Who it is for: a C7 or C9 roofline, where bulb orientation is the whole look. Who should skip it: anyone running 5mm or mini lights - the small bulbs slip straight through.
Cons: unbranded; wrong clip for small bulbs; brittle in hard frost; no published temperature rating.

The string they are built for: the Brizled C9 set. C9 is the shape clips are designed around, and the one that most benefits from being held upright.
Who it is for: a roofline outlined properly. Who should skip it: wraps and small-scale work.

If you rent

Clip-on lights are about the most tenant-friendly exterior change there is: nothing drilled, nothing adhered, nothing left behind. Two cautions are worth stating anyway.

Check the lease for exterior decoration terms before you start. Plenty of buildings have rules about what can appear on a facade regardless of how it is fixed.

Avoid adhesive on painted surfaces. Outdoor adhesive hooks are genuinely useful on brick, and genuinely capable of taking paint off timber when they come away in the cold. On painted fascia, clip the edge instead. The broader deposit-safe approach is in no-drill lighting that will not cost your deposit.

For ambient patio string lights, which hang quite differently - guy wire, hooks and poles rather than edge clips - see how to hang string lights without drilling.

What it gets right

  • Works on a gutter lip and a shingle edge, so one pack covers a whole roof
  • No fastener of any kind - nothing is driven into the house
  • Holds the bulb upright rather than letting it hang sideways
  • Comes off in spring without a trace

What it costs you

  • Plastic clips get brittle after a few seasons in frost
  • Gutter guards and leaf covers defeat many gutter clips
  • You will lose some in the gutter every year
  • No clip holds well on a wet, iced or mossy edge

Brizled C9 LED Christmas String Lights, 16 ft, 25 Bulbs, Warm White

$15.99 - View on Amazon

#ad Price as of October 11, 2026. How we earn

The big traditional C9 bulb in LED form - the shape that outlines a roof and still looks like a bulb rather than a dot of light.

LumensNot published
Color temperatureWarm white; no kelvin figure published
CRINot applicable
Power sourcePlugs into a standard outlet; 25 LED C9 bulbs over 16 ft
DimmableNo
Renter-safe methodPlugs in and clips on. Nothing fixed to the building.

What it gets right

  • C9 is the large bulb shape that reads from the street, not a pinpoint
  • LED, so a long run draws a fraction of what incandescent C9s did
  • 16 ft with 25 bulbs is roughly 8 in. spacing - the traditional roofline look
  • Rated for outdoor use

What it costs you

  • No lumen figure published, which is normal for this category and still a gap
  • Not dimmable
  • 25 bulbs covers one short run - a full roofline needs several sets
  • C9 bulbs are bulky to store

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

+How do you hang Christmas lights without nails?

Plastic light clips that grip the lip of a gutter or the edge of a shingle. They hold the bulb upright, take no tool to fit, and pull off in January without a mark. For brick or render, adhesive hooks rated for outdoor use are the equivalent. Nails and staples are never necessary and both damage the surface permanently.

+Will light clips damage my gutters or shingles?

Properly sized clips are designed to spring over the edge and apply no more force than it takes to stay put, so they do not mark a gutter or lift a shingle. The damage in holiday lighting comes from staples driven through wire and nails into fascia, not from clips.

+How many light clips do I need?

Roughly one per bulb for C9 and C7 runs, which at 8 to 12 in. spacing means about one per foot. A 40 ft frontage therefore wants about 40 to 60 clips, and buying a 100-pack covers that with spares for the ones that end up in the gutter.

+Do light clips work with gutter guards?

Often not, and this is the biggest single failure case. Leaf guards and mesh covers remove the gutter lip the clip is designed to grip. If your gutters are covered, plan on shingle-edge clips or adhesive hooks instead and check before the ladder goes up.

+Can renters hang Christmas lights?

Clip-on lights are one of the few exterior changes a tenant can usually make, because nothing is fixed, drilled or adhered to the building and it all comes down cleanly. Check the lease for anything about exterior decoration, and avoid anything adhesive on painted surfaces, which can pull paint on removal.

+What holds Christmas lights on brick?

Brick has no edge to clip to, so the options are outdoor-rated adhesive hooks or brick clips that grip the mortar course. Neither is as reliable as a gutter clip in a hard frost, so brick frontages are a case for keeping runs short and checking them after the first freeze.
