The best sunset and moon lamps

By Sawyer V. ยท Last verified October 17, 2026

One of these throws a sun onto your wall. The other sits on a shelf and glows. Neither will light a room, and both make better gifts than lamps.

Specifications are the manufacturer or retailer published figures, compiled by hand. We have not measured them, and where a figure is not published we write "Not published" rather than guess.

The verdict

For a gift that is still useful in February, buy the Mind-Glowing 3D moon lamp - it is dimmable, has an auto-off timer, and at 5.9 inches it is large enough to read as a moon. For the sunset effect specifically, the XEBKOR projector has full 360-degree rotation, which the cheaper 180-degree units do not.

These are decorative objects, and this page treats them as such. Neither type publishes an output figure, neither will light a room, and the honest comparison is of handling - whether it dims, whether it times out, and whether it works without an app.

Two moons and two sunsets. No listing here publishes lumens. Prices as of 17 October 2026.

The two products sold under one heading

Search for aesthetic room lighting and these arrive together, which hides a real difference.

A sunset lamp is a projector. The product is the disc of orange light on your wall, and it depends on things the lamp cannot supply: a dark room, a plain pale wall, and a viewing position. Change any of those and you have bought a small plastic cylinder.

A moon lamp is an object. It glows wherever you put it, needs nothing from the room, and - if it dims - does a real job at 3am. It is the lower- risk gift by a distance, which is why both picks on this page are moons.

03

How these were judged

  1. Does it dim? The feature that decides whether a decorative lamp can also be a night light.
  2. Does it work without an app? A physical control, for a gift.
  3. Aiming, for the projectors. 360 degrees beats 180 at the same price.
  4. Size, for the moons. Under about five inches and it reads as a ball rather than a moon.

We did not test these. Every figure is the listing's own, and where nothing is published this page says so rather than guessing.

04

The picks

Mind-Glowing 3D moon lamp - the pick. 5.9 inches, dimmable, touch and remote control, auto-off timer, cordless once charged.
Who it is for: a gift that has to survive past the novelty - this one becomes a night light. Who should skip it: anyone who wanted the projected effect; this is a lit object, not a projector.
Cons: the most expensive moon here; 16 colors is a novelty; no published lumen figure; the printed surface marks and is hard to clean.

BRIGHTWORLD moon lamp - the same idea for less. Same 5.9-inch size, same 16 colors, remote and touch, on a wooden base.
Who it is for: a child's gift, or anyone who wants the object rather than the night-light function. Who should skip it: anyone who needs it to dim - the listing states color control, not dimming.
Cons: dimming not stated; no auto-off timer listed; no lumen figure; the small wooden base is easy to knock the moon off.

XEBKOR sunset lamp projector - the better sunset. Full 360-degree rotation, multicolor, with a button as well as app control.
Who it is for: a room where the blank wall and the outlet are not conveniently opposite each other. Who should skip it: anyone without a plain pale wall and a dark room.
Cons: no published brightness or throw distance; the companion app is the usual unbranded one; as room lighting it is decoration only.

Tsrarey sunset lamp - 21 colors, same money. The wider color range of the two projectors, with a push-button switch so it works before anyone opens an app.
Who it is for: someone who wants to run cold blues as well as sunset orange. Who should skip it: anyone whose wall is at an awkward angle - 180 degrees of rotation is a real constraint.
Cons: 180 degrees rather than 360; no published brightness; the effect is finite, and it is one effect.

CRINot published
Power sourceRechargeable (USB) per the listing
DimmableYes - dimmable, with touch and remote control

$17.99 - View on Amazon

$20.99 - 14% off

#ad Price as of October 17, 2026. How we earn

Twenty-one colors and a push-button switch, so the effect works without an app - the detail that decides whether a gift gets used or abandoned at setup.

LumensNot published - a projected effect
Color temperatureNot applicable - colored projection
CRINot applicable
Power sourcePlugs in (USB powered per the listing)
DimmableNot published
Renter-safe methodStands on the floor or a shelf and throws light at a wall. Nothing fitted.

What it gets right

  • A physical button as well as app control, so it works out of the box
  • 21 colors covers warm sunset through to cold blue
  • 180-degree rotation sets how high the disc sits on the wall
  • Small and light enough to move between rooms

What it costs you

  • The effect needs a plain pale wall and a dark room; anything else kills it
  • No published brightness, so wall distance is trial and error
  • 180 degrees, not 360 - less aiming freedom than the XEBKOR
  • It is one effect, and the novelty is finite

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

+What is the difference between a sunset lamp and a moon lamp?

A sunset lamp is a projector - it throws a colored disc onto a wall and the effect lives on the wall, not in the lamp. A moon lamp is a lit object that sits on a shelf and glows. They are sold side by side as aesthetic room lighting and they behave completely differently: one needs a blank pale wall and a dark room, the other works anywhere.

+Do sunset lamps work in a bright room?

No. A sunset lamp is a low-output projector, and daylight or an overhead light erases it entirely. It needs a dark room and a plain, pale wall with nothing on it. If the wall you had in mind is papered, textured or covered in pictures, the effect will not survive it.

+Can a moon lamp be used as a night light?

The dimmable ones can, and that is the better reason to buy one. A warm white setting on a dimmable moon lamp with an auto-off timer behaves like a proper night light. A moon lamp that only changes color without dimming does not - you are choosing between bright and off, and bright is wrong at 3am.

+How bright are sunset and moon lamps?

Nobody publishes a figure. Not one listing in this set states lumens, and the honest answer is that they are decorative - bright enough to be seen in a dark room and nowhere near bright enough to do any lighting job. Treat the glow as the product and plan the room's light separately.

+Are sunset lamps just for photos?

Largely, yes, and several listings say so outright - photography, video and social posts are the use case these were designed around. That does not make them bad objects, but it explains why the effect is intense, narrow and best viewed from one position. As room lighting they are an accent and nothing more.

+Do these need an app?

The sunset projectors here have app control and both also have a physical button, which is the combination to look for - a gift that requires an app before it does anything is a gift that sits in a box. The moon lamps use touch and a remote and need no app at all.
